    Help with E8400

Ok......I installed the chip and everthing went smoothly untill I ran CPUz, CPUz is showing my CPU at 2.2 instead of 3.0. It occasionally jumps up to the 3.0 but doesnt stay for long. did I do something wrong or is that how they operate? I have a P5KPL-VM motherboard and updated the bios.

    HELP!!!

Turn off Speed Step, otherwise known as C1E, from your BIOS.

    Post back the results !!

Looks fine. Now turn speedstep back on... unless your overclocking.

          I am overclocking right now.....

Just ran a 3Dmark06 and came out with 12537 all factory

          before I put in the E8400 I had a D 2.8 820 and was only able to get 6327

          Specs:
          Asus MB PK5L-VM
          Samsung RAM 2 gigs 800MHZ
          430 Thermaltake PSU
          BFG 8800GT OC2
          E8400 Core 2 Duo

will it make that much of a difference if I overclock the CPU and GPU?

Speedstep is a method of throttling your CPU when it isn't demanding the horsepower .. it only ramps up to max speed when the system demands it, such as launching a game or an A/V scan.
I never leave it on, but I OC every chip I own.

With good cooling, you should comfortably hit 4.0+ ghz with that chip. That should net you another 1,600-2,000+ in 3dmark. Its a very fine line between stable and OC'd and failure, so be careful and push it in small increments.

                Just OC'd to 3.4 and everything seems stable.......ran 3dmark 06 and pulled 13570.

                thats 1000 more!!!

I need to get an aftermarket cooling to go any further

Thanks for all your help guys. if you have anymore suggestions on how to make this badboy run better let me know, its my first build.

Welcom to the DIY'er club, Sniper !! Glad you've had success with it so far, and I wouldn't doubt you can wring more out of that chip than what you're at now.

Don't give up on the stock fan for now, but keep in mind your chip voltage is at stock, so it may be necessary to bump that up as well. You can go up to 1.4v on an 8400 chip with a stock Heatsink.

If you get daring, use a frontside bus of 445 with a voltage bump to 1.38+ to break the magical 4ghz barrier.

Quick question. What are you using to test this CPU o/c? I hope it's not just 3dMark06.

Great point...use Prime95 and run a torture test for min 2hrs to test stability

Try this link. I think this is the version I use at home but I don't know for sure. Run it for several hours or overnight with no issues and oyu could call it stable. .

Having tried many cases I've given up on expensive ones. Not convinced they are significantly better than an inexpensive gel case for 1/10 the money....
