Help w/ Large LCD TV as monitor (need help with res.)

    Hey all

I'm posting this from my old gaming computer (which has a x800 gto ATI, hehe) from our new TV which is in the living room (it is 46 inches)

I am having some problems with the right resolution. What resolution should I be running this at? I tried to set it at 1920x1080, but when I did that, there were parts that I could not see on the screen. When I moved around with the mouse, it would scroll the screen to where the mouse was, but then there was more missing from the screen. I tried to set it up in the TV options, and the only options that I can pick from are 16:9 and 4:3. And I want 16:9. Also, on the TV settings, if I tried to move the computer input around, anywhere that I moved it from the starting position was black space.

Right now, the resolution is @ 1600x1200. Everything seems quite wide lol, and I can see that the aspect is 4:3 based on the res. But if I set it to a widescreen res, I can't see the whole desktop on the screen unless I move the cursor to where I cannot see, and then the opposite part of the screen I would not be able to see.

    Urgh.

Thanks for reading please help, I'm pretty sure at least 1 of you guys (mike?) has an entertainment PC out on his regular TV.

Not sure if it'll be like my TV's but it shows capable resolutions in the manual. Try there first. Are you running it at the correct refresh rate?

This one gets really tricky, and I had the same problem with my HTPC hooked up to my plasma TV. First, you need to make sure that your TV supports that resolution, as the card itself may be capable of it, but the display isn't !! My card could do 1600x1200, but the plasma's native display was a rather funky 1336x768.
To work around that, I had to go into the Monitor tab of the display settings and uncheck the option to hide modes that the monitor cannot display. I then had to select the proper setting from that list. Even so, I still had to zoom some of the channels to a higher scale from within Media Center using the MS remote.

Was that using an ATI card? With my new htpc i just plugged in, booted up, and scrolled across to 1360x768. Strange one really as my TV's resolution is 1368x768 or something. It leaves a small black border on either side.

How are you connecting this btw? HDMI, DVI, VGA?

Just noticed yours is a samsung like my 2. Could it be possible that the resolution for PC's is something weird again like 1920x1074?

If you don't have much luck try here

I know a lot of manufacturers these days don't include full manuals any more. Looking at page 45 and 46 of your manual looks like you have a bit pc home theater options.

Wow looking at page 44 you have a lot of resolution options. My Sony only has one native resolution, 1024X768. I can do other resolutions on it, but 1024X768 is the only one that actually fills the whole screen.

His manual is just like mine then. You have a stupid ammount of options you can choose from.

I apologize for not replying yet. I am still kinda getting used to the new forums and somehow I missed this thread. In fact, I did a search for "mike" just for kicks and this was on the top of the list.

Your remote should have a source button on it. There is a certain way that you have to plug in, power on, press the source button, and see the display. For some reason if you don't do it in a certain fashion it won't register in the TV that there is a source plugged into that port. I don't have this particular model, nor have I toyed with it, but I am sure it it something simple. Let me re-read this thread and see what I can come up with, too.

Try running it as 1024 x 768 and not in widescreen and see what you get.

Is exactly right. Just because the TV will function at a resolution and the video output is capable of it, doesn't mean that they will comply with each other. When I first plugged in my PC to my 61", I had a 2 ft wide section that was black on all four sides with a (seemingly) itty bitty box in the middle which showed the PC's desktop. Toying with the ratio and rebooting, restarting the TV in a certain manner gave me my desired results. I did achieve the 1600x12k resolution somehow, but since we got a Wii, PS3, and Xbox360 I have removed the PC from the mix.
