That 854T is a problematic router as well ... a recent article in Maximum PC had a poster mention that he bought three of them that all failed within a year, and one of the Max PC writers also had an 854T fail on him as well.

I'm running an 834 Netgear that was a refurb unit, and short of one port on the router going bad on me, its been a nice upgrade from my old D-link 514 unit. I'd be interested in seeing what would happen with another router in place.

When my modem started giving me problems I called Bell South. When they saw how old it was they sent me a new one free, including the shipping. Imagine my surprise when I received it. It was a combination modem, wired and wireless router. Free is good.

I PM'd Darth the details on the Netgear 854T issue, as detailed in the April issue of Maximum PC. It was in their InOut: Letters column and had a reply from Netgear indicating a small number of 854 routers that experienced failures at extreme conditions, so they were aware of it and replacing the units as they were reported.

I'd love to link it, but being its their current issue they don't have a PDF or even a web link available at this time. If you use this router, you should know this is a possible problem that can be addressed and corrected.

I have this router, run servers through it as well as have 3 other people gaming on the same thing. Never had an issue. I love it. My connect is nothing but awesome, no lag, no sluggishness.

My router allows me to throttle each client I.P. bandwidth. It is especially useful if you have someone on your network who likes to download via limewire, kazaa, or any other file sharing program. I usually throttle everyone back to 10 Kb/s and open up all the other pc's that are gaming rigs.

You know it's funny. When I had a roommate who was downloading all types of crap he swore up and down that his bit torrent client could throttle bandwidth of other users connecting to his system. Well I still lagged out. So I slapped ntop on my linux box. Ntop will display nice pretty charts of the type of network traffic. I found out two things. Yes the Bit Torrent client did throttle bandwidth but, what was happening was that my router was getting slammed by all of the inbound bit torrent clients TCP connections. So I cut a firewall rule where he couldn't register to the directory service for bit torrent. Meaning he could download but, not seed.

The other thing I found out was....well when he was alone in his room....ummm being busy...if you know what I mean.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
