    I was going to mention the DNS, but mapes got there.

    You dont really need it, but you can have it setup on the one thats out of line of the inet

    example

    [pc2]----[pc1]----[www]
    0.1---[leave alone]

    Really like mapes said pc2 wont need it, but in order for it to resolve addresses it will need your external DNS
    setting pc1's dns to pc1 will just cause DNS to fail.

    Setting the dns on the 2nd adapter on pc1 will cause windows to attempt to use it as well to access the internet, usually resulting in failures.
    This i noticed when i used my 2nd adapter for a similar use.

    I'm not insane. I'm just overwhelming!

      LOL!

      I understand what he is trying to do. I was under the impression that this was a temporary setup just to transfer the files from one pc to another. Oh well.. you guys will work it out.

        I guess he dosn't access the internet from the media PC. I'm curious why he just dosn't put a switch and hook everything up. Probably cause the PC has like a PPPOE login on it.

          Nope.

          The connection isn't permanent. I just need to hook the two PC's together when i need to transfer files. Both PC's are upstairs, but in different rooms.

          The setup i'm going for.

          Paint FTW!

          I'm trying to do it the cheapest way possible. This 20m cable cost me ?5.

              I'm sadly running really low on funds right now. Hence trying to get by with the cheapest option. The media PC also doesn't need internet access. I'm running the OS on bare minimum. No anti virus, spyware scanner etc. So basically it's a standalone PC...... that i need to transfer files to as fast as possible.

              I could always go the switch route at a later date.

              Is this still the correct way of going about things? Or should i have the default gateway still entered on the connection settings of the media PC.

              Main PC

              * IP address: 192.168.0.1
              * Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
              * Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1

              Media PC

              * IP address: 192.168.0.2
              * Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
              * Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1

              Disable Home network and Internet connection on Main PC
              Disable Home network on Media PC
              Enable Home Network connection on both PC's
              Enable Internet connection on Main PC

              Going to try and get this going in about 45minutes. If you can Mapes. Please write out a very dumbed down guide for me. Just in case i think i've missed something.

                          Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
