    Question

I have a 8800 GT 512 vid card. Was wondering if any one out there has this card and tell me if you have found the perfect setting for COD 4. Or is it possible to tweak the cfg. file like you could WAYYYYY back in the days of return to castle wolfenstein. COD runs good but there are so many advanced settings that you could mess with to really bring out the best in this card. Any suggestions would really be great. Thanks

Well, there are many settings that will affect performance. Resolution, Anti-aliasing, Particle effects and Post-Processing all play probably the biggest role these days.

You should be able to really crank out the frames with that card, unless you are running a less then stellar CPU. The effects that hurt your performance the most in COD4 are going to be
      • Soften smoke edges - adds very little to the MP experience
      • Depth of Field - actually WORSE for MP than off
      • Dynamic Lights -I wouldn't outright turn it off, but "low" might be worth a shot

Other than that, there are various settings in the cfg you can tweak on to get an overall better experience. Note: Before you EVER go tweaking in your config file, it's a really good idea to make a copy of it first. While you can always just delete it and start from scratch, it's much nicer not having to reset everything by hand if you screw something up. Also note that some settings, especially dealing with network connection and textures, are protected by punkbuster, so don't tweak on stuff unless you know it won't get you kicked!

Location: [Path to Folder]\call of duty 4\players\profiles\[Player Name]\config_mp.cfg
Here's a few of the ones I've tweaked on my config:
      • seta cg_fov "80" - better field of view, only minor hit to performance, this is the highest it will go
      • seta com_maxfps "200" - If you can go higher than 200, you probably don't need to tweak anything else
      • seta cl_maxpackets "100" - this is a network performance setting, and at best only helps smooths things out....server controls this value.
      • seta cl_packetdup "0" - only needs to be "1" if you drop packets, which you can check by turning on the lag-o-meter: /cg_drawLagometer 1 in-game (console command)
      • seta r_vsync "0" (I've NEVER liked Vsync, always looks worse than high fps to me )

And of course the aforementioned graphics tweaks (accessible through the normal interface)
      • seta r_zFeather "0" - Soft Smoke - again, kinda pointless in such a fast-paced FPS.
      • seta r_dof_enable "0" - Depth of Field (that thing that makes your enemies harder to see )
      • seta r_dlightLimit "2" - Dynamic lights....4 is default high, 2 is low, 0 is off.
      • seta r_glow_allowed "0" - This is the bloom of the level, doesn't effect performance too much, but this is a personal preference.

Don't forget to add some AA....helps a lot with the overall look of the game

There are plenty of other tweaks, especially for those with less powerful cards, to get the most out of COD4. I'll let you those
Again, be aware that PB will kick you from Cain's lair if you tweak the wrong settings, since Cain runs his PB lean and mean

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
