    Artifacts with recent video card?

Weird colors with fairly new video card

I've only been getting this with BF2, but I do play it for hours at a times. Is this called artifacting? My default fan temps were 28%, but I used riva tuner to turn them up to 50, now I turned them to 75, hopefully that will fix it

Looks like artifacts due to overheating to me. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers though? That's always a possibility. Might want to check airflow in your case and make sure the fan/heatsink is properly attached to the video card as well. Shouldn't be happening with a new card if all is working correclty. Keep an eye on it, you might want to think about getting the card replaced if it continues.

Looks like a driver bug to me. Remove your current set and install some other ones. Might be a good idea to use a driver cleaner too.

Not all drivers work for everybody, and the latest drivers aren't always the best. Tweaks r us? I presume this is some sort of modified driver? Why not try the official Nvidia releases?

Hey, I need some l33t nerds who might still have an idea what is causing this.

I recently changed to latest WHQL drivers and thought it cured the problem. (Didn't have it for a few days). But it has started again.

I did some research on my PSU just to make sure it is up to par and it should be in theory....though its a single 12v rail, it does have 28A (OCZ 520w Modstream) so that should be good enough. I think the OCed 8800GT's need arond 26A or so-ish

The highest temps I've seen are in the low 50C's when playing BF2 for an hour or so. I've got the fan already turned up to 100% (since it shipped with default only 28% or something lame like that) I've tried using nHancer settings and letting the "application decide" on visuals. I've turned down the AA and it doesn't seem to matter. AFAIK, 53C isn't too high for a video card. My last gf 6800XT was doing 80C!!!

One thing to note (not sure if this is relevant or not), I am using the 3GB/switch with the userva=2560 variable or whatever it is.

I'm at a loss here, this is frusterating, especially since I can never enjoy BF2. I also play Flight Sim X, and I don't have any problems with that.

EDIT: Also, I did a massive google search on images and could not find any that look like mine, most people have funny looks spikes that look like this:

            |XP Pro SP2|Foxconn SLI 590 MCP|AMD 6000+|MSI 8800GT 512MB|Creative X-Fi|2x1 GB Corsair XMS2|
            |36GB Raptor|250GB WD Caviar|250GB Seagate|Thermaltake Tsunami Dream|OCZ Modstream 520W|

My motherboard always overclocks the PCIe slot whenever I try to ramp up the memory speeds. This might help trying to isolate the problem.

Overclocking only ever gave me artifacts in one game: Oblivion. I"d have little white lines coming from the eyes of NPCs, pointing to whatever the townspeople looked at. Sometimes their clothing would be just a blotch of colors. Most terrain was terribly screwed up.

Just because it happens in one game only don't mean its not an overclocking problem. Could be other games handle it better than others. Try looking in your BIOS to see if voltage for your vidcard is correct.

                Thank you for your reply

I have been running this interesting shader program for a while now and the temps leveled out at 62C on the GPU

As you can see I increased AA to maximum the program would allow

This is actually the hottest I've seen my card go

It is a factory overclocked card too.

How would I check the voltage of the card? I've also read some people underclock their cards, but I say whats the point of doing that if you purchased it factory overclocked, it should work right?

Also, I ran ATITool and tested for artifacts and the thing shows artifacts after a few seconds. and the funny thing is, once I set it to test for max core speed, it bumps the core WAAAY down to like 250 lol! Because any higher than that it gets artifacts.

                RMA time or what?

Same here. I actually had my RAM set at its proper 799.9 speed, but for some odd reason my PCIe was bumped up to 117. I was under the impression it should be 100, but its yet another one of those odd things that happens using just the right combo of hardware and tweaks.

I"d just reset BIOS to default and set the driver control panel to auto or no overclocking. Don't know where those would be on an ATI card.

can't you lock the speeds of PCI?

The last time i had a graphics card do that (6800GS) the GDDR had died. Hope it's not the case for you too.

Btw. You're really pushing it with that PSU. 28A on the 12V is extremely low. Even my old Akasa PSU had 32A. My current Corsair has 50A. I hope you're not running too much hardware from it as the higher the W you use the lower the stable A are. You also have to remember that it's not just the graphics card that runs from the 12V.

I agree with Juneau .. its likely the card is dying. I've had the same thing occur, but the PSU shouldn't be ruled out t this point either.

Meh, I don't think its dying, I just bought it a few months back

I talked to some guru on the nvidia forums and when I went to check on my fan speed (which I thought was at 100%) it was only set to 30 default again. So I changed it to 50. So far so good....

I ran one of those psu calculators and it only said it needed around 375 to run everything.

I wish there was a way to test how much amperage was being used.
