    .mil botnet

Interesting idea of creating a military botnet for DDOSing any country that tries to attack our computer systems cough cough (china)

ARMED FORCES JOURNAL - Carpet bombing in cyberspace - May 2008

Yay not will we have script kiddies bottlenecking the internet datapipes like it is just now, but governments want to join in too...

Can see the potential in it, crippling an enemies means of providing propaganda etc
But the data bandwidth is still finite in the wild internets, ok its hard to fill but its still finite...

I'm not insane. I'm just overwhelming!

from my understanding, they are looking to "recruit" civilian PC's to aid in this task to to stop digital juggernaughts *cough*china*cough* from doing their internet pillaging functions. India is just now experimenting with this same tactic after a similiar tactic and intrusion was used against them from an unnamed Asia-Pacific nation.

Actually, there was an interview with some Air Force higher up who said that as they upgraded PCs that instead of trashing or reselling the old ones that they would load them with just enough to become part of the botnet. Then intall them in any empty space that they can find. They specifically stated that "civilian" PCs would not be part of the botnet. If you can trust our government/military :P Plus that becomes an invasion of privacy and if I found such software I'd sue the hell out of the government, the Air Force, and anyone else I could think of involved with the effort. Not to mention if they were illegally installing it I'm sure someone would find a way to piggyback some information or code back to the computers directing the effort that wouldn't be very nice

And well, I may have spoken too early....

Slashdot | Air Force Aims for Control of 'Any and All' Computers

Noah Shachtman on Wired.com's Danger Room reports that Monday, the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB introduced a two-year, $11 million effort to put together hardware and software tools for 'Dominant Cyber Offensive Engagement.' 'Of interest are any and all techniques to enable user and/or root level access,' a request for proposals notes, 'to both fixed (PC) or mobile computing platforms ... any and all operating systems, patch levels, applications and hardware.' This isn't just some computer science study, mind you; 'research efforts under this program are expected to result in complete functional capabilities.' The Air Force has already announced their desire to manage an offensive BotNet, comprised of unwitting participatory computers. How long before they slip a root kit on you?

Can we not build Skynet yet? I'd like to avoid the Machine War for a few more years.

Lol. sadly, Skynet was the FIRST thing that popped into my head based off the articles. once the "bot-net" achieves critical mass, whos to say that the smarter and smarter bot net's might not someday create an AI. or worse yet, the Bot's that the us government uses have a "made in china" label

So would that make it C-Skynet?

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
