    Security Alert?

This is a friends comp, trying to fix it. What is this crap here and how do we fix it so we can actually dl stuff?

Little information on what website it came up on, what file it was, if you can download other files, what browser you're using, if you've tried another browser, what kind of security settings are currently enabled would help...

Go to Tools, Internet Options, Security. Make sure Internet is highlighted and see what the slider is set to. You may need to lower it.

No slider. I dont know much about security, but I already ckecked that. I clicked on custom settings and looked around for things about downloading, I couldnt find anything.
EDIT: hehe, I obviously dont know anything about this, I went to the wrong area.
2nd EDIT: lol, I did go to the right place, I just went through the control panel.

Well try checking out the firewall and user privs. I cant remember but there might be a permission that needs to be set for his user account.

It was already set on Medium.
Where would I be able to check who is the admin. He should be admin, it is his comp, but he is very comp-illiterate and has young kids, so stuff gets messed up easily.

Well, I am trying to download firefox for him, but this security alert wont let us download anything.
And I am guessing that was a joke right? I mean, anyone who knows the slightest bit about computers and the internet would get firefox. That was the first thing I tried to get.
I cant get any anti virus or antispyware stuff to start cleaning this rig up.

Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts. See what his account is listed as. Should say Computer Administrator, possibly with Password Protected under it.

You can also do Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management

Open up Local Users and Groups -> Users -> Right click his profile name -> Properties -> Member of tab

                      Should have Administrators under there.

You may also want to start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can download anything at that point.

I can download nothing. There is no point to booting in safe mode because there is no anti virus/mal/spy/anything ware on this computer, and I cant download any. Is this some virus or something or is there some setting somewhere that is really messing this pc up?

why don't u download firefox from u'r computer, put it in a USB drive, then transfer and install? I personally can't live without FF, even thou download speeds are three times lower than IE, it still the best browser.

I could do that, but that isnt the main objective here. Nothing can be downloaded, having firefox probably wont fix that problem.

you can start the computer in safe mode with networking. That would allow you to still have internet access while having the computer in safe mode. Also, what actions have taken place with the computer lately. Have you checked the router itself (if he's behind a router), or reset the modem for his dsl/cable connection? Have you tried pinging the download link or pulling a tracert on the download link to see what it states? This would help as well.
