    *sigh* Something Broke

Well other then being struck my lightning yesterday, which was an unfortunate turn of events, my computer also died on me (again).

From my quick evaluation, this is what I've come to: I believe my CPU chip got fried.

Why? Well here's the story. I turned on my computer after then thunderstorm, it booted up alright and everything was fine. Connected to AOL fine, Connected to MSN fine, same old, same old. But when I tried to get out to the internet, I had an EXTREME lag. I felt like I was running dial up, except possibly three times slower, which is strange compared to the 10-12 MBps speed I usually get. I figured maybe something got screwed up in the storm, so I attempted to configure my internet via trial and error. Reconnect, restart the modem, fiddle with the adapter, etc. etc. Eventually I gave up and watched TV for a few a hours, and I left my computer off.

I come back, boot it up again, and my internet is still dragging, but everything else with my computer seems to be functioning normally. I accept my loses and just deal with the slow internet, do some forum surfing, when I start to hear this ever so familiar high pitched squeaking sound. I know it only as loose bearings about to go in a fan. I figured it was one of three case fans, as my CPU fan is still relatively new (when I saw new, I mean 6 months old :P). I stop each and every one to see if I can pinpoint the sound, but it still persists. I take a peek inside and see that my CPU fan is motionless. Common knowledge will tell me that is bad, so I turn off the computer and call it a night.

I pull it apart this morning; I wanted to evaluate my fan to see what happened to it. When I pulled it off, my CPU chip came off with it as it was fused to the bottom via thermal paste. I peeled it off, put it back in, and checked my fan. It looked ok, the bearings seemed fine, and it seemed all too unusual. I cleaned some dust off it and put it back in, except this time, it started right up. I let out a sigh of relief thinking my computer was going to be ok this time, except I realize I'm receiving no signal from my monitor. Now from past experiences I know that an orange monitor light, and a working computer, means a motherboard issues. Considering the CPU chip was fused to the bottom of the fan, led me to believe that it is fried.

Now I come to you with a few questions.

    A. Is my conclusion correct? Did I fry my CPU chip?
    B. If I did, is it going to be cheap to replace?
    C. Should I replace it? It's a fairly outdated home built rig, I'm currently looking for a job. Should I just accept my loses and duke it out on my ghetto laptop until I can afford a new rig?

    Many thanks Cain Lair Dwellers.
I can always count on you.

I have an Opteron 144 chip that is permanently affixed to the underside of its stock cooler. It literally popped out of the socket it was that tightly affixed to the underside of the heatsink. So no, your chip may be OK after all.

In the future, you can use a hair dryer to heat up the heatsink and gently pull the chip lose that way. You never mentioned what kind of chip you have, but your best best is to find a friend who can test the chip in their PC for you. It may be the network card (onboard in most cases) or the hard drive as well, but its very difficult to determine what exactly did go bad.

I'll offer up diagnostics if you can't find anyone else. Send me the chip and I will test it in one of my rigs. If you are worried about my honesty and intentions, I have plenty of guys to vouch for me. After playing on this server for 8+ years, I have a reputation to uphold, and I plan on hanging around for years to come, so your gear is safe with me.

Yay PC troubleshooting for my Wensday Afternoon

Please don't mention my harddrives. I'm not sure what I'd do without either one of them, or both for that matter.

I'm just confused as to why it was working last night, with a stopped fan, but now it's not working, with a working fan. I'll see what I can do and I'll be back.

What CPU is it? CPU's for along time now have auto shutdown triggers when the temp is too high. I doubt it's your CPU tbh. I'd be looking at HDD, Motherboard, and a very small chance of PSU.

Are you using a surge protector? If not, why not!

It's an Intel Celeron chip. I happened to have one on an old motherboard, and swapped them out, and it now boots up.

BUT after its past the initial loading screen (when it checks the drives, memory, etc.) and proceeds to windows my harddrvies make these odd clattering sounds and that it shuts off.

I know it's both because I cut power to one, and booted it up, and the one still plugged clattered, and I did the reverse for the other one.

Please don't tell me they're bad That'd be YEARS worth of files gone

I assume there is a problem with them considering HDD's usually don't make odd clatter then have the PC force shutdown..

HDD's and clunking noise = bad bad bad. Looks as though you have 2 fried drives. This is why you should always back stuff up.

I pulled them both out of their bays and watched them while it booted up, and the clunking sound appears to be gone.

Something still doesn't sound right, and I beleive it's coming from my PSU, since my HDD's don't seem to be causing the clatter, as I just got to the "how would you like to start windows?" screen, and my computer imediately shut down after I pressed enter.

Does it sound like a HDD issue or a PSU issuse? Because my HDD's shouldn't be working at all (if their fried), or is the "how would like to start windows?" screen not related to the Hard Drive what so ever?

*sigh* I take back my previous statement

Due to the clattering, I beleive my hard drives are shot. Why? Because whenever it tries to load windows is the point it force shuts down at. Could this be a windows error? Because my HDD's seem fine other the breif clattering sounds.

If not, then 5+ years and 170+ gigs of collected files are gone >.>

And my computer will be rendered useless as I don't have the spare money to buy new HDD's..

Looks as though a section of the drive has become corrupt. Best thing you can do is leave them alone, buy a new drive and then see what you can retrieve. A 250gb HDD is extremely cheap these days.

I would look into the PSU. Do you have another you could swap in for a test? Bad power can cause lots of strange things to happen and you did mention lightning.

What are the chances of two drives and a CPU chip going bad all at once

Ever if HDD's are cheap, it's still money that I do't have.

I was only struck by lightning via a phone charger in the basement ( I happened to be sitting on it, entered my theigh and went out my feet ((mostly my right foot), my comptuer was unplugged on the 2nd floor.

Slim to none. Occam's Razor needs to be applied (i.e the simplest answer) It's prolly the PSU except with the CPU it's possibly not seated correctly.

Ahh. ok I would double check and reseat the CPU and see if that fixes anything.

Also the odds of both drives going bad are extremely rare.....

Since you can boot from the drives, they still work, sort of. But they will not last long.

I would hook them up to a different machine and copy what you can off of there, QUICK!
