allright, this has been bugging me for some time now...

I cannot get xp SP2 for home edition to load up on the laptop that I am on! Every time I try to get it to run (even in safe mode w/ networking) it just hangs at the beginning of the install. I'm trying this on a Sony Vioa VGN-N130G. All drivers up to date w/ minimum processes running. Only thing I keep running during the install is AVG. Note: I've upgraded the ram from it's original 1gb of ram to 2x1gb sticks of ram.

    Solutions?

    Ubuntu?

Really though, are you trying a clean install, an upgrade to SP2 from vanilla or SP1, or what exactly, I'm a little confused by your wording. If it's a clean install, maybe try creating a new disk. If an upgrade, try downloading the direct upgrade if you're using a slipstreamed copy, or creating a new slipstream of your XP disk. Make sure that all the hardware on the laptop is compatible with SP2. I'm assuming that the disk drive works with other disks? Any obvious physical issues with the XP disk that you're using, if you're using one? If you're using a disk, can you get it open up the XP menu on another computer?

Try getting the direct download from Microsoft to use rather than Windows Updates. I'm assuming that you're talking about using the downloader/installer from Windows Updates through the Microsoft website. Try this download to install SP2 directly with the installer from Microsoft.

I know it says don't download for one computer, but it will work. You may also want to just update directly to SP3. In which case you can again try Windows Updates, or use this direct download file.

As far as slipstreaming, if you use nlite (nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation) it does a really excellent job slipstreaming. You basically rip the XP disk to your computer, use that to slipstream in a SP or updates with nlite, and then burn a new disk, so you don't actually do anything to the original disk.

          upgrades =

When I install Win I always install from the original disc etc

As to what the problem might be....could be a corrupt file in the upgrade process.

Well, I slipstreamed my XP disc to SP2 and made a copy that I used for later installs. It is quite easy and makes the install process easier since you don't have to go back and install all of the patches. I didn't use any 3rd party apps. All you have to do is copythe contents of the CD to a folder then "install" the patch on the folder.
