Another reason not to download music illegally

    http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/...ect_PCs_1.html

Pretty ingenious in what it's doing though. Some common sense would defeat it, but we all know how much common sense the "normal" computer/internet user has these days....

What ticks me off is that an obvious file extension that should do no more than be an audio file is able to EXECUTE code to open a browser on your PC !! Whaaa ????

Its as simple asthis: If you try and play a song and a CODEC popup plops on your screen, you DON'T DOWNLOAD IT !! Its a simple workaround, but how do you clean the infected files once they are wrapped with the ASF wrapper ??

This may only affect WMP, which defaults to automagically installing any 'missing' codecs. For anybody still using that piece of garbage, its time to switch.

Well, if you're stupid enough to install it apparently it will search your computer for MP3 and MP2 files to convert to a windows media file wrapped in the ASF shell and then it keeps the original extension tag somehow. Now, if you know not to install codecs when requested to do so, or you're not downloading music illegally via P2P you're fine. But it's the masses that are out to grab a free song from Limewire or Kazaa who will see the request, click yes, and then increase the infection who will be in trouble. And I have no great faith in the masses on the internet.

This may just drum up some business for me at home, so I guess I shouldn't gripe about it. Most of the PCs I work on with teens using them have Limewire installed, and I feel sorry for them .. almost.
I warn the parents and I do what I can, but at some point the end users are 100% responsible for their actions.

If you need more proof of how easy it is to fool these boobs, read this:

I caught my daughter using limewire last year and I deinstalled it and threatened her with a baseball bat if she put it back on. I cannot describe how much I hate these type file share programs!

Personally the number one reason for me not to download music is that it's ripped badley or the tags don't follow my particular naming convention....

Dosn't stop from bringing my portable drive to a friends house though

Yeah, people have been doing this for ages but they keep finding ways to execute arbitrary code on more and more data types. I guess if you pirate music you just need to find a good, respectable pirate community.

                ... hehe..

*uninstalls Limewire, utorrent, bittorrent, edonkey, frostwire, music folder, and hdd*

Thanks for the warning, I don't think I will be stopping soon.

No you're not in that much danger.

Ya just gotta be careful with limewire
I kinda need it for when someone in my band just says "listen to this song, were doing it in 3 days" I'm not gonna go out and spend 15 bucks on the album unless I like the song

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
