    Computer will not shut down

I have a hang issue when I try to shut down at XP Pro's "Saving Settings" Window.

Anyone have any reccomendations other than pulling out the plug?

Clean it up? Defrag? What was the last thing you have done with the computer before the issue?

Have you changed any security settings recently? Do you have the "clear page file at shutdown" set? That could make it hang... also are you running SP2 or SP3?

I'd just do a hard shut down. Or let is sit overnight and see if anything changes, then do a hard shut down, heh.

It shuts down. But it takes a long time to complete whatever it is doing.

I'm thinking it may be Zone Alarm. I just remembered that they had an update this weekend.

Maybe time to look for ad/spyware? Just a thought.

If that happens to mine, I yell at it, then press the button. It's worked 4 times... Though the button I pressed was the power bar button

spybot, ad-aware, and isntead of zonealarm try avg for your anti-virus... been using it for years with no problems, if it's still doing it after all that... a hi-jack this report as well just to be sure.

Try to shut it down one more time, let it hang for a few minutes. Take note of the time when you go to shut down.

After getting it back up, take a trip to the event viewer:
                    Start>Control panel>Administrative tools>Event viewer.

Look under "Application" and then "System" for errors after the time you initiated the shutdown and before you restarted, post them.

Sounds like your profile is not unloading, thou thats just one cause of the 'stalling' may be other things.

The recent update from Zone Labs was fubar.
Upon uninstalling it, the shutdown problem went away.

On top of that, you should see some of the s--- that AVG found on my PC.
I'm just sitting here in awe that a free tool would be effective.

Good one Hammy, now that you mention it, that's why I quit using ZA. I used it for years and a couple years ago they came out with a major update that started this issue. I guess it's back

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
