    Gateway laptop.

Well after a couple of weeks of sitting around a laptop that wont play games and watching everyone get Crysis going I have been shopping around for a new lappy. I do like the dell with twin 8800Ms in SLI but this one was reviewed in MAXPC and got a KA award. I like the FSB 1066. and at $1400 it sees like a good deal. Does anyone have any experience with Gateway?

Have you looked at it in person yet ?? I was surprised at how BIG it was .... the battery hanging off the back is quite sizeable, but the think is a freakin' BRICK !!

Nice hardware config, servicable support ... chop $150 off the price and you're golden. I looked at the 6x series lappy, with only a single 8800 card.

I will have to check it out in person. When I drive from here in Boston to home I may stop at a Best Buy in Tax free NH to see if I can look at one. I'm used to carrying around a huge laptop so I don't imagne it coud be too much worse then my XPS gen II. %99 of the time I'm plugged in at the hotels I stay at. It's a seriously attractive price.

The way I figure it I can spend 3 to 4K on a laptop every three years or 1.5 on oine that should last 2. Here I sit in year 3 with this one and it's not working out that well. Heck BB has 18 months zero% now so that a low payment for entertainment. I know guys that spend more that that a month on smokes and bar tabs.

Crud! I got the approval from the wife and the closest stores and online are sold out. Concord NH is my only chance I hope they will hold it for me.

          Duke,

I'm on my second Gateway laptop. I've had no problems with either. My current is an M-series, a step down from what you're looking at. I mostly use it for writing and such: my desktop is the gamer. Anyway, I think that Gateway offers pretty good bang for the buck. I shopped around for a bit before buying them, and I've been happy with them since.

I've seen them on sale at Best Buy over any holiday weekends, and over the July 4th holiday I had a co-worker buy one. She saved $150 by waiting a week for the holiday sale, but its obviously a crapshoot on whether the laptop will be one of the sale items.

Either way, thats how I got my hands on it. Its going off to college with their son, so I've worked out a deal to buy it from them after he graduates. Geez, four years ... I hope its not obsolete by then !
