Oh -- I'm not building, my parents don't want to risk me screwing up stuff, lol... I'm just getting the parts to give to the PC shop so they can build it
DoH !! TYPO ... it was in fact the WD 640, not a 650.
I really like that parts list, and was surprised to see the new Gigabyte board under $100 already. The Q9300 is good for at least 3.33ghz with some tweaking, and the video card is obviously a step up from the 8800 series.
I hope Nail enjoys putting it together. He's a great guy, so he deserves a solid, trouble-free build that lasts him at least three years. You guys know I geek out on these threads as well, as I consider it my area of specialized knowledge, so its just a matter of doing some research and helping out friends.
Juneau, I re-read the Anandtech review, and based on their seven games, the ATI and Nvidia cards won three each with one being a tie .... so it mostly depends on what games you are palying, but no card came out a clear cut winner in thei opinion. They mostly criticized Nvidia for releasing so many different cards in an effort to slow the ATI bleeding they have been suffering.
And just think, they've done this over at least the previous 3 gens. Nvidia are like sore losers sometimes.
@Naillik: Your parents don't seem to be very trusting.
I tried to talk him in to building it earlier too, lol. I like the looks of what WT has there. Personally I'd probably stick with the Corsair PSU. From what I've read it's better to have just 1 12V rail instead of multiples.

Depends on the PSU really all of Corsairs range is brillint. HX520 user here.
*starts persuasion tactics for him to build it himself*
C'mon Nail...
I built my first computer when I was 15 years old. I ran into trouble... which was of course expected... but I got it done. You can too. I can find you the guide I used, it has lots of pictures lol
And if you get stuck you can just take a pic and post it here for help
You'll save what, 50-100 bucks

Yeah, from what he said, he's willing but the parents aren't. So unless he gets permission to put together all that shiny computer equipment, doesn't sound like it's going to happen.
The only concern when building a PC in my experience has been mounting the heatsink fan. Hence Juneau's post to go with the AC 7 unit, which I agree given the circumstances.
It seems like if a local shop builds it, I am certain they won't overclock the CPU, but I had chosen the Q9300 based on its ability to OC like crazy, so thats yet another variable that we are dealing with.
I dunno ... I agree it is ultimately up to your parents, but you have to learn somehow if you are at all interested in building or maintaining a PC, so .... *shrug* ... what can you do ? I have an open offer to build a PC for any Lair member with no charge for my efforts, but nobody lives nearby other than Trooper, and he's already a PC genius.

um.... nope... And I dont trust the pc shop guys, but my mum does.. and thats what counts, lol
when she gets back from TO next week I will show her that list

I used to put models together as a kid and I just think of computers as expensive models.
Congrats.
