Neither tbh. Your Q6600 is enough for anything right now.

I agree save your money, you will more then likely not see any performance increase and if you do it wouldn't be worth the cost of a new CPU

C2D 8k's will only beat the q6600 in single or 2 threaded apps, anything using 2+ threads will run better on a q6600 and if you oc the q6600 you can get close or a lil faster with single threads then an 8500. OC them both it might get interesting. You have only 1 course and thats go to up to a newer quads and the performance to price diff realy isnt there unless you just have to have a new more powerful cpu.

Upgrade your CPU cooler to this:
            Newegg.com - Thermalright Ultra-120 CPU Cooling Heatsink - CPU Fans & Heatsinks

            or this:
Newegg.com - Tuniq Tower 120 Universal CPU Cooler 120mm Cooling Fan and Fan ControllerHeatsink - CPU Fans & Heatsinks

And overclock your Q6600 to 3.6 yay!

To say that is an upgrade is a bit of a stretch. Just no point in it. You sound like you need to build another rig, just to get it out of your system. Maybe try making an HTPC rig ?

I need a new rig- and it's painfully transparent finally.
I am running a Pentium D with an OEM Mobo from Sony in it.
It has 4GB of DDR memory in it.

As a market, we're in the middle of transitioning from DDR2 to DDR 3
We're in the middle of transitioning from Duo to Quad Cores

My processor and memory are two generations old.
And it is only now that the limits are being reached......

Makes you go hmmmm doesnt it?
The real question is- how much money do you spend and how much actual value comes out of that investment?

To get that number, take the total value of the components, add it to the value of the initial build of the rig (do not subtract the cost of parts you swap out); Then divide that number by the total number of months you have owned the machine.

So $798 to buy mine from Sony.
$139 for the memory upgrade from 1 to 4GB (estimated)
$100 for the new Power Supply (estimated)
$179 for the last video card (the new one was given to me)

Actual number when divided by 54 months came out to 22.51 per month is my realized personal cost of ownership monthly.
For some of the machines I see getting build around here, it has to be almost $120.00 a month for you all.

Value is different from person to person. I had a female customer that wanted a watch fixed that wasn't going to be worth any where near the cost of repairs. She wanted it done because it was the only thing she had that had been her father's. To her it was priceless.
I also made asterling silver necklace with 5 bezel set nickels in it. It cost a lot more than the $.25 that the nickels were worth. I had trouble not crying when the husband told me he was making it for his wife. The 5 nickels were the only thing in their 16 year old son's pockets when he died in an automobile accident. I have rebuilt it twice because she never takes it off.
                  Apache ( again)

So what you are saying is that I may be personally attached to my Pentium D? uh...

@ Apache thats a touching story.

As for the value per month issue I have come to realize that when I buy laptops for gaming that I can spend about $3000.00 for a machine that works well for about 1.5 years and OK for 1.5 more. Thats $85.00 per month. Thats whuy I bought this cheaper Gateway I hope it works OK. My desktop is about 1/2 half that if I figure that I used my older CPU for the rig I built for my SD. So for two rigs that leaves me about $150.00 per month. That's a lot of cash but it's nothing compared to what some my friends spend on their hobbies. Heck it's nothing compared to owning a boat.

                      Sorry for the hijacking

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
