Challenged by a hardware upgrade today

One of the eVGA 9600GSO hot dealio cards got here today, so it was clear that I had a hardware upgrade mission to attend to. I knew it wasn't going to be a walk in the park, but ... yikes, was I in for a hair puller !

Started off with the simple fact that SLI cards do not easily fit in anything other than a full sized tower case. I was using a new Raidmax Smilodon Extreme case, that I really do like after spending some hours with it:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...w%20-%20Retail

Existing card (no sweat fitting that in !!):

First concern was getting the hard drive moved in the cage to accommodate the bigger card it replaced. No sweat, until I realized that adding the second card (with its dual width cooler) would effectively cover ALL of my SATA ports !!

New card, oops .. its BIG !!:

Hmmm ... OK. Just use some special right angle SATA cables that I had handy just for such an emergency. After I booted into Vista, I soon was warned that my Vista Business was 'not genuine' and I need to re-activate it. I guessed that this was an issue with the key being used on another build that I put together last year, so I had no idea why it was being flagged now (its a retail DVD, so I can transfer it from PC to PC), other than this was MS just being MS with an aggressive WGA policy.

Rather than phone it in, I wanted to give Vista 64 a try, so I pulled an identical drive to the one in the PC, going for the dual everything approach this time. Dual core, dual video, dual HDs, so I set about creating a RAID array to install on the drives.

Ohhh, but now I had to rearrange the drives yet again due to the fit of the second card (not here yet, but eyeballing it you could clearly see that it would hit the power and SATA cables from one if not both drives). OK, this was starting to wear me down, but nothing seemed insurmountable yet.

I get my RAID array created, I install Vista Ultimate 64 and I'm booting into Vista and downloading ... 277mb of updates !! Yikes !!! Well, after that finished, I put the brand new Nvidia drivers on, then rebooted.

BSOD, reboot. BSOD, reboot. BSOD, reboot .... the endless loop.

I first tried Safe Mode, then VGA mode, then 'Last known good config', and finally 'Disablea reboot upon BSOD'. That netted me the totally worthless Stop:00000000x1a erro message !!

Next up was repair install of Vista, assuming an update or driver has hosed it.
That met with no success either !! But it did resume the troubleshooting from that point after the BSOD, reboot loop this time. It then offered to use an earlier restore point ... *shrug* ... OK, I hadn't really done anything in Vista to that point, but sure enough, there was a restore before the Nvidia driver update.

YESSSS !!! Got logged in, got back to the desktop and was able to continue with the driver installs and my usual suite of utilities to go on the PC. Its now doing another crapload of updates, but I guess the Nvidia driver released two days ago is a no go for me, at least on Vista 64.

Trust me, I doubt my troubles are over, but I did learn some stuff from this one, and that's the bottom line. If you can edumicate yourself a bit from these hair pullers, its at least some benefit when it happens again.

I'll bench it once I get everything situated, but a quick check of the Windows Experience index netted this (quite worthless, IMO, but all I had to see how it compared to my main rig):

    5.7 Overall
My main rig earned a 5.6 (?!?) but it was all 5.9 scores other than the Primary hard disk (netting me that 5.6), so I assumed RAID would improve that score. Ermmm, not much. I only improved to 5.7 using the RAID'ed 320gb Seagate drives. Anyhoo, its a 64 bit platform to test, and I don't have to worry about hosing my main rig when I have this rig available.

Shoot ... spoke too soon. The updates are hosing the OS, so one (if not more) of the driver updates has me doing another rollback. This is FUN !!!

Still functional this morning after installing all but two SATA driver updates via Windows Update. One of them is completely corrupting the boot process, so now I hafta narrow it down between the two and what the fark is up.

Nvidia nForce driver update for RAID Class Device
nvidi nForce driver update for 430/410 Serial ATA Controller

Skip the matches and marshmallows for now .. maybe we burn it next weekend.

Edit: Found a thread with my same problem - no resolution yet:

XP ?? Wazzat ?? Oh, Vista SP1 fixed it, but Windows Update is still demanding that I do these stupid driver updates.

HDTune shows my RAID is not running optimized at all. Low rate of 4.8mb/sec is lousy for even a single drive !

Maximum PC had an excellent review of RAID a few months ago. It turns out that if you want to get the best RAID configuration you should use a discreet card, the ones based on the motherboard are not good at all.

I remember doin a raid array back when ME came out and after a few months 1 HD burped and i lost everying on it so i went with a 10k rpm raptor and nowadays a 1 tb harddrive can burn the old raptors.
I cant see much use in raid other then for backups.
And what Vid cards did you go with Walkintarget?
Most older Motherboards dont take into account large GPU's when they place there sata connections.
I ended up having to buy some rubbery connectors and bend them cause i could not fight 90's tight even to fit under my card .
My cards also sit about 3/4 of an inch off the back of my HD's which is normal for most mid cases that point them front to back instead of side to side in the case.

When it comes to SLI if at first it dont fit. Use a larger hammer

Donzi, the vid cards were the eVGA 9600GSO's for $99-50 MIR +$14 coupon code = $36 (with FREE shipping) after rebate. I bought one Tuesday, then another on Friday after the 'Egg added the $14 coupon code.

So far, I was not quite floored with the initial 3dmark06 score of 8900, but after overclocking the card (nobody bought them to run them at their default speeds when you can achieve a 30%+ OC on them), I am now happy again after it netted a 10,480 score. That's only one card, so I'll improve that considerably once card #2 gets here.

Still can't get the RAID performance solved, as the highest speed I can net is 87mb/sec with a sustained of 47mb/sec. The drives I have should be netting around 90+mb/sec, so I am stumped. That's half of what they should be getting !

RAID is new to me, and I agree with Troop on the discrete card (same as an onboard video card to me ... junk), but there is no way it should be worse than a single drive, or even RAID1 would net !

I've done a lot of internal juggling, and I'm fairly certain I have the room for the card. Its going to be tight and warm, but this is a new build, so I'll work the bugs out. My saving grace is that this is a test rig, and not my main rig, so it isn't a huge issue.

Can't fit a RAID card in the board after I get the second vid card in there. Its bad enough I hafta go to onboard sound, but I doubt I could even squeeze a RAID card in it.

Most modern onboard raid is extremely good these days. What stripe size are you using?

I agree. I am using onboard RAID on my system, and I get about 112MB/s average when I run HD Tune. I just used the default stripe size I think, but I'll check tonight to make sure.

Default stripe size .... 4k IIRC. That should not be an issue, but I can tell you I have been doing my RAID homework lately.

When I run HD Tune, it starts at around 70+mb/sec, then drops off at different points over every run, sometimes it drops within 10 seconds (all the way down to under 10mb/sec !!), and others its running in the 50/60's until the last part, where it dips down to under 10.

End result is 45+/- mb/sec, which is way lower than the single drive in my main rig. That scored a 58mb/sec, so RAID should net me at least 90 mb/sec using these 320gb 16mb cache Seagates.

I was even thinking of pulling a drive and breaking the RAID, then using my Windows Home Server to drive image the full drive contents back onto a single SATA drive, then running the benchmark again. That's the beauty of my WHS ... I can run this RAID 0 setup and not suffer any loss.

Here's the weird part .. the PC doesn't seem slow at all, and the 3dmark benchies show exactly what I would expect of the rig, so the only indication I have that it isn't running fast enough are the HD Tune benchmarks.
