    Wireless Router

Alright so I need to find a good wireless router i was looking at Netgear's, Linksy's, and D-Link's selection and I really don't know which one to pick. Oh and they gotta be 802.11n routers and I came across these but feel free to recommend others.

Well, my best experience with routers has always been with Netgear or Belkin routers. I've had too many Linksys go to crap after a few months to a year to feel safe with them. I haven't seen enough reviews on 802.11n routers though to have much say on which models are better.

Question though, why do you need 802.11n? Depending on what your neighbors are running, how close they are, and where you plan on using it, you might not even get the benefits. 802.11g is more than good enough for most applications.

Well there is literally nobody in my neighborhood that has a wireless router and I have about 4 different sources that would need internet (PS3, 360, Wii, and, Laptop). This would be just for me but since n/g to me does not make a difference I just thought the better of the two was N.

N basically uses 2 channels to create a larger bandwidth for your wireless connection. The only problem being if someone is nearby with a G or N router it will interfere, and if the N router can't successfully navigate around it, it will drop a channel and you lose bandwidth. N is also a heck of a lot more expensive, depending on how much you want to spend. Also, none of the things you mention will connect to N (at least that I know of) except the laptop, and you'll need to get a USB or Express card to use it, because as far as I'm aware there's no laptops with built in N yet. As far as I'm concerned, the only real reason for buying an N router at this point in time is if you want to transfer a buttload of data over the wireless, or if you're trying to stream HD content.

If you are set on an 'N' router, it should be a D-Link. Google and read all about the horrible experiences Netgear users have had with the 834B and 854T units.
In fact, Maximum PC had an article on these units that were failing in their labs, yet they glossed over this until a reader made a comment the following month on it. They promised to check into it, but you don't need to have them tell you there are issues when you find so many failing units.

So how do I know this, or am I just another guy griping about some hardware I don't have. Welllll, I have an 834B and it worked fine for 4 months, then port 4 died on the router, never to return.

I'd love to buy an 8 port Gigabit wireless 'N', but nobody sells an 8 port last I looked. 5 ports doesn't help me a bit. Check out the D-Link units, they do seem to hold up better and offer good packet prioritization.

Troop, N supposedly offers slightly better range as well, so I'd recommend it, as its akin to having a quad core CPU. You don't need it now, but it never hurts to have something left in reserve for six months later when you may in fact need it. You can't upgrade a 'G' to an 'N', so buy the faster one and hope it lasts for longer than your PC.

I don't really read too much into routers but one i keep hearing praises of lately is this.

            Belkin F5D8631UK4A

Just thought i'd throw it in the mix.

edit: Appears to have a slightly different code over there.

I have a macbook air which uses N and I think the others support b/g too. Probably going to pick up the D-Link or Netgear one. Thanks for the feedback guys!!

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
