MS on the pirate offensive !

    *snip*
If you continue to use these pirated tools on and beyond October 20, 2008, you?ll be treated to a totally black desktop every 60 minutes. You will, of course, be able to resurrect this by changing your desktop pic, but that?s going to be a lot of electronic fumbling about.

Furthermore, you?ll be subject to near-permanent warnings down at your taskbar. Oddly enough, all of this will happen without breaking your Windows system

So Microsoft's latest strategy is to possibly sue the individuals using its pirated versions of Office of XP Pro. Talk about your economic stimulus !! They are clearly targeting Chinese users with this one, and the Chinese economy is BOOMING right now.

I wish MS wouldn't flipflop every 8 months with how they deal with piracy. I agree that they need to take a stance that cuts down on piracy, as they run a business to make money, but the constant flip flops are annoying.

I hate flip flops too ... a nice casual slipper at least covers those unsightly toes !!

Anyhoo, its the typical MS scenario, in that some department chases after another one to crack down on this or that, and in 4 months its forgotten about, until the cycle repeats itself after some staff meeting with lots of bulleted slideshows.

yea they CAN make a program for that but it would be a MASSIVE ram hog, constantly checking your serial numbers and registration keys.

NOT what i meant. I mean if they know my copy is illegal, how about downloading something to shut it down completely?

lol was just about to edit that post...
if they find a "bad " key, they can remote uninstall the program (they have a keylogger built into Vista and SP3 so password protection is worthless)
and yes in the EULA you agree to it as it is part of the "changes to the program at any time without warning" clause

Phantom, I hate to burst your ego bubble, but you aren't worth MS time to seek out and find. You are more or less the dude who isn't paying for any OS, but your one copy is a trivial number compared to a shop selling 10,000 copies of the OS out of the back of the shop.

MS cannot get their regulations to affect the Asian/Chinese market, where rampant piracy is the norm. When I visited Guatemala 2 years ago, I had talked with a local about donating a laptop to them, but had just thought of the American OS on it. He laughed and said "Ohh, thats not a problem around here. The hardware is what is most valuable".

Its this simple - just like a smart squirrel, they go after the big nuts in the woods. You are but a small nut in the forest of life.

seriously thou, I am using a legal copy of windows right now, payed 140 for a 64 bit when it came out. Yet i do have all the pirated ones, just in case I need to reformat. You do make a great point.

What Microsoft does not do, however, is sue individual downloaders. Unlike the RIAA they don?t think that the people who are potential customers are the right targets in their battle against piracy. Instead, they mostly target resellers who sell illicit copies of their products. ?Legitimate businesses struggle to compete against these illegal resellers who undercut their prices and contribute to the 20 percent software piracy rate in the U.S.,? the company states.
Today is Microsoft?s Global Anti-Piracy Day.
I think just about everyday is some special day now.

That makes no sense. You dont need a pirate for reformats. In fact all you do is call the hotline, tell them what you did, and they regenerate the key. I have never paid for a new key.

Too much of a hassle to call "Brian" in India and tell him I reformated and I would have to call every couple of months, it simply is too much inconvenience.

I don't like the prices MS charges...but it is their software that you are buying the license for, and I believe it allows them to run WGA somewhere in the EULA or ToS. If the cheap bums don't want to pay for Windows, let them run Linux.
