The researchers from the Security and Cryptography Laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne are able to capture keystrokes by monitoring the electromagnetic radiation of PS/2, universal serial bus, or laptop keyboards. They've outline four separate attack methods, some that work at a distance of as much as 65 feet from the target.

In one video demonstration, researchers Martin Vuagnoux and Sylvain Pasini sniff out the the keystrokes typed into a standard keyboard using a large antenna that's about 20 to 30 feet away in an adjacent room.

I was reading about this before. Other than maybe some corporate spying, which would be difficult already, I don't think that there will be a lot of "practical" use gotten out of it, unless some asshat at Starbucks starts stealing customer passwords

I have also heard that they have trained people who can tell what keys are being pressed by listening to them. This technique seem more plausible then the human ear.

If you suspect something like this is happening check the cable from the keyboard to the pc. A simple connection can be added that records everything typed and they are relatively inexpensive to buy. Just collect the connection at the end of the day and there you have it. And they are totally undetectable by software, so I believe.

They're called key loggers and some of them use wifi to send the keystrokes to a remote server...

This tech isn't new - the headquarters of the CIA has special outer windows positioned away from the building to twart the such technologies... for example, I've heard rumors of devices that can read the EM field emitted by the old CRT monitors, allowing someone to see what your seeing without being in the same building, and without being able to see the screen. I'd assume a simple mod would have allowed them to the same things mentioned in the story, or more.

Certainly CRT radiation has been read before. Thats called tempest...the the shielding is called uhhh tempest shielding. Also if anyones read cryptonomicon they cover reading the radiation from the video ram and using that info to reconstruct the screen image. So from the stand point of reading electromagnetic radiation no this isn't new. However this is the first time people have done it with electro noise coming from the keyboard it self
