Here's the disheartening news for everyone:

<insert name of your antivirus> sucks too.

I've worked on hundreds of PCs with every free/pay antivirus, and they are ALL vulnerable if you are doing stupid stuff. Nothing more than a simple zero-day exploit will open up your PC like a can o' worms. Every app/plugin has had an exploit.

Off the top of my head, that is just scratching the surface of what has happened in over a year. I can't honestly guarantee any PC remains bug-free if you are into the underground stuff.

I bugged Duke about this before, but unless your PC is acting wonky, the sneaky trojans are never discovered, so saying your A/V is keeping your PC clean is truly guarding Fort Knox with a deadbolt and nothing more.

Even an online scan once a month is at least something to add to your arsenal.

As for the underground stuff, it is not a place for amateurs. Viruses lurk behind every .zip, .rar, or .exe file.

Very true. But there's still some AV apps that i trust a lot more than others.

Not true I sniff all data leaving my net and review weekly. I don't run an AV and I don't need to cause I see whats on the wire

Mapes, you are unique in your situation for obvious reasons, so I don't even bother you in regards to knowing your PC like the back of your hand.

Its the casual user/gamer we have here that feels their A/V is doing its job and that is that. The important thing to keep in mind is that all antivirus devs are on a reactive schedule:

1) brand new exploit is released.
2) user's PC is infected in less than 24 hours of the above's release.
3) AV tries to quarantine infection based on its heuristics training.
4) AV developers pick apart the exploit and create a new AV update to deal with it.

If you get a bug early upon its release, it has plenty of time to do its dirty deeds on your PC. We aren't talking about year old trojans and backdoor jobbers here, we are talking about new rootkit technology or Windows bugs such as the one last month where MS made the drastic call of rolling out the fix off their normal schedule due to the severity of it.

I know that is how they work. They will never be able to release fixes before a virus etc is released into the wild. But some AV apps just do there job better than others. Norton is pretty famous for just leaving most viruses as it can't detect them.

Like i said before. While we'll never be fully safe, i still trust some apps more than others. Namely Avira and NOD32.
