    BIIIIIIIG problems

got some big problems with my desktop. it was running fine. i go to work. come home and my mouse is locked up in the lower left corner above my start menu and wont work, it just bounces around when i try to move it. if i restart the computer in safe mode the mouse works it works fine.
i have avg full virus protection and ran it in safe mode and didnt get any thing. also ran a disk clean up, and a disk defragment. dont have a any spam or add ware programs because my avg has them built in....
i have no idea whats wrong. i got and auto update from hewlett packard while i was at work and it loads on startup and thats the only thing i can think of that would have done anything.. so i found that update (i think) and removed it but its still locking up my mouse. i also tried a system restore and it did nothing.. the only thing left i can think of is a reformat but i dont have a windows xp set up disk.
only problem with a reformat tho is i will lose alot of my pictures, graphic design work, and drawings that i dont have saved any more...
Apparently my BF EA manager name is "AwesomeFK" If anyone knows how to change that let me know.

Does the keyboard work? Can you click the "windows" key and see if the start menu opens? Also, make sure that it's not just your mouse... Try hooking it up to a different computer.

I would suggest you backup your files (obviously) but could be a driver problem... I've seen drivers get corrupted before, and you get results similar to this.

What operating system are you running?

Do me a favor and show us what processes are running by getting a screen grab of the tasks listed in task manager on the processes tab.

If your running XP you could also run the following command and upload the process.txt file to this thread. What I want to do is see what process is keeping you mouse forced to the same spot. It has to be a driver of some sort that is messing with it since you said safe mode works fine.

I you want to save a txt file of processes like I was saying try the following in the Start > Run box
wmic process list brief > %TEMP%\process.txt

Once this command runs navigate to %temp% and find the file if you want to upload it.

Is your mouse USB? If so try a different port, or preferably use a ps2 one.

If you suspect the HP update maybe you could go to an earlier restore point to fix it.

Good point, bad ports can do weird things

I've had this happen to my machine before, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

ya my keyboard works. thats how i shut it down and got on safe mode.. i know its not the mouse caz the mouse works fine while the computer is running in safe mode.. I cant back up any files because my burner wont operate in safe mode. i cant burn in normal because you have to use the mouse to click the start burn button.

already tried and the computer failed the system restore. and the mouse is not usb

i know for a fact the mouse is not at fault because it works fine in safe mode and works for about 10-30 seconds on boot up before locking up

Henry... PrtScn button is your friend... click it and then open paint all while in safe mode... then paste in paint and there's your SS.

Funny thing is, you haven't tried another mouse ... and that clearly is step #1 in the troubleshooting process.

Regardless of whether it works for 1 second or 1 hour .. if it stops working, why don't you at least replace it to test ?

+1 Even if it still doesn't make a difference at least you've eliminated 1 possibility

because ive had my computer running in safe mode for 2 days now (constantly running) and the mouse works perfectly. so why would the mouse work fine in safe mode and not in normal

edit: the mouse out of safe mode also can right click left click and everything else...

Try safe mode with networking, then go to imageshack or photobucket and upload the saved image to there... that should work for ya.

And do you mean you can't paste the image into paint in safe mode?

Do you know why its called SAFE MODE ??? Your mouse has a driver for it. In SAFE MODE, the specialized driver is bypassed and Windows uses a generic driver. So far, we haven't gotten anywhere with fixing this PC.
