well at first she wanted a laptop. but now she thinking about getting a desktop. i actually agree with her getting a desktop... i can get more bang for my buck also. Also, if there is ever a problem with the computer its way easier to fix a desktop than it is a laptop. And on one more point, i'm trying to get her into gaming a little bit. nothing hardcore, but she has showed some interest.

My wife, who used to game a good deal, had a desktop for years. As she went back to school and started working for some non-profits, she required more mobility. She went with a Dell laptop and she totally loves it.
She said she would never go back to having a desktop. Being in the living room, in the kitchen or wherever and being able to be online is great for her, as is the fact that she can go to any coffee shop and so on and get online. She also brings her laptop on trips or when going up to the cottage.
I bought her a laptop through work and she got a sweet dell deal. Cost her $1200, but she has a 4 year not-at-fault insurance thingy on it, plus it has an nvidia card in it. Its powerful enought to play the Warhammer Online MMO at low settings. She runs Spore and some CS:S as well. Haven't tried Fallout 3 on it though.
So yeah, your issue is budget. You won't get a laptop for $500. Well, nothing that can game. You can get some good laptops to allow for web and standard stuff like that for $500.[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

You need a desktop with the following:
Duo Core or Quad Core
Supports 8GB of Mem
Supports PCI E (PCI E 2.0 would be ideal but not necessary)
Everything else wont be important until she actually starts gaming. *waste of money is what I mean*
Then IFshe actually gets into gaming, you can upgrade the vid card and the memory to something that wont chug when she plays.
I have an HP Pavillion a6040n, I bought a 9600GT and slammed the machine full of memory and I have been fine since.
See if that works out for you.
(Hint- Amazon.com has some great deals on HP computers)

Give me 10 minuets.... I'll find ya a barebones. All you might have to do is install some Ram and throw windows on. Oh, um... AMD or Intel?
Edit1: Found this AMD... Comes with 2gb of DDR2 ram, an AMD 4600+, a WD 160gb HD, a Nvidia 8500 Vid card in PCIe (not great, but it'll get ya started and off of that onboard video. lol), and a 450w PSU. Again, this isn't going to be doing any major gaming, but it'll be great for web browning, e-mail, and a good basis to jump from in the future as that MoBo (an ASUS M2N model) should support an AMD 5500+ at the least if not an AMD 6000+. Just throw in a larger PSU when it's time to start gaming and you'll be ready to rock and roll.
Doh! I forgot to put the link in...

NEVER NEVER NEVER BUY A MACHINE FROM THESE CROOKS!!!!!!!!!!
They sell you a piece of crap, charge you to ship it back for repairs, send it back literally falling apart and then have the balls to yell at you because you rip them on review web sites.
Do an archive search here for ibuypower and you will see my whole experience.
