For some dumb reason, NVIDIA cards don't seem to have automatic fan control out of the box...

Not likely. RAM issues usually result in a BSOD or system restart. But worth checking anyway.

        70C is nothing!

Some of the 570/580 series cards are not being shipped with a default fan profile that works as expected. I read up on a few cards from certain vendors that were not ramping up the fan speeds as the card heated up.

Its quite rare in fact, but I wouldn't be surprised if a driver update may have something to do with the problem. Also, the 570 cards seem to have more than their fair share of problems with the VRMs overheating. Nothing you can do after they go bad other than RMA the card.

Well, my underclocking solution is still working. In fact, I forgot to underclock this morning for a quick game. Locked up right away. After I changed my settings, no issues whatsoever.

Would appear you've joined the ever increasing 'poor factory overclock stabilty club'.

Well, I'll play with it this weekend and see if I can find something stable. Maybe a bit more carefully applied voltage. And this is assuming it's the card and not something in the game or drivers. I'll try taking off my OC of the CPU to see if that makes any difference.

But, I am VERY happy I can play. I haven't measured my FPS, but it looks gorgeous and smooth.

That is the EXACT issue that the Zotac cards exhibit. Google 'Zotac SLI issues' and you'll find some odd things going on. It appears the Zotac cards, among others, are not being set from the vendor with the same voltage to the card, ie: some are set for 1.0v and another (identical) card is set for 1.013v.

My GTX275 did it also. The fan never went above 40%. Ever since then, I have always used Rivatuner and now Precision to control the fan.

My 8800gt was factory OC'ed, no issues, my new 560 is factory OC'ed, no issues last night.

Have those of you having problems ever gone beyond the manufacturer overclock and maybe have damaged silicon now? Always possible prior additional clocking could have caused problems that didn't show till the cards really get worked by the new game.

Nope. Brand new computer upgrade (everything but my hard drives and monitor). Doing a bit more research, this is not an unusual problem with factory overclock issues in some games. Reading a bit on the EVGA forums, some have increased the factory voltage to get some stability. I'll play with it this weekend when I'm not pwning noobs

I will report I've been getting some odd behavior with my evga 570 factory OCed... using the recommended latest whql drivers too.

Once in a while the screen goes black and I can see my mouse cursor in certain areas near the middle of the screen. It's almost as if a popup window in the browser came up and it wants to be "in front" of BF3...

Have a GTX 460 and I still BSOD every other game. Just checked again and nothing is OCed. This game truly pisses me off.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
