I guess this is happening to a lot of people, including me, according to the BF3 official forums on the battlelog.
If you are trying to join the server, and it says "You must first install the game", in the bottom left near the Battlelog updates, it will say something about an update. Sometimes when you click on it, it will lead to the store trying to get you to buy BF3.
What you need to do is restart Origin. To do this, on Windows XP, click on the arrow on the bottom right of your screen on the windows bar, right click on the Orgins orange "O" thing, and click "Exit"
Then, click on Origin on your desktop and sign in, and the update will automatically start updating.
My horoscope this morning told me that a lot of people will probably run into this problem, so I hope this helps. If it doesn't work, hopefully EA fixes the solution soon.
