    Server Location

I think it's time to look at changing the server location. Because of all the recent crashes many people including myself have played on other servers. Seems that this location has much more trouble staying up. I havent seen these problems on other servers. I would guess others havent either.

That and we're starting to lose more players when we crash than before. Seems people just dont want to go to the trouble of playing here if the server keeps crashing.

I could be wrong but it's something to look into.

Eh, it's a coding problem, not a server box problem.

I can promise you that 100% of all servers crash at least once every day. It's just like that. The boxes can't handle all those bullets, smoke effects, and characters. Have you gotten in an AA? All those bullets that it shoots register. All those bullet holes that you make? They stay there the entire map. It's just a really demanding game and servers struggle to keep up. And then there's Dice's coding. That's a story for another day.

What he said. There is a memory leak that causes all of the servers to crash. Game Server Admins have been complaining about this since the release.

I doubt you spend half as much time on those different ones as you do on cain's lair! =P

Anyway, I'd love to see those crashes fixed soon..

BF2 had the same issues. However it just crashed again. 2nd or 3rd time since I've been on.

if thats the case then all the server owners should pull together and take down all the servers and that would make them get there shit together with thee half ass sloppy software fixxing and make somthing solid for once ...but that would take team work...and we all know people dont stick together on issues no more...for god sakes look at the state of our leaders in power fighting and pointing the finger at one another instead of working to gether to find a solution to our problems for the whole......gg and down we go with quality...lol dont hate just a thought :P

But it seems to be more often on Cain's Lair. The other night it crashed 2-3 times in the course of 2 hours. This was without the server full the following times too... If it was just a memory leak issue it would be happening just as frequently on other (full) servers, but it doesn't. It could be a combination of a memory leak combined with under-provisioned servers. You know all these things are virtual machines sharing memory, and if their virtual environment is not provisioned properly and machines cannot requisition resources as needed, you will get a crash. It can happen with things as simple as virtual desktops if you have your memory too over-provisioned...

You mean over-provisioned servers. If they were under-provisioned, there would be plenty of memory for all of the virtual servers

No. If you under-provision memory you definitely are not supplying enough for the given task. Under-provisioning means to 'not provide enough' while over-provisioning means to 'provide too much'.

I was talking more about how you provision memory to virtual machines... For example, you can have 10 machines, with 1 GB each of allocated memory sitting on a host with 5 GB of physical memory (extreme example)... You do this in the case where a vast majority of time, they are all sitting idle and consuming something like 256 MB... Every now and then when one goes under full load, it uses the full 1GB, but its fine because the total does not exceed 5 GB. If it does, you have to have some sort of HA in place so the machine(s) can migrate to another host with more resources OR you shut down machines to free up space.

So basically, the host (physical server) can have under-provisioned memory (not enough for all the virtual machines it is running) while the memory on the virtual machines are over provisioned... In the example above, if all of the machines go into full load, you are consuming twice the resources of the physical machine. It does not have this memory to give, so applications and even the operating system on the virtual machine will crash.

When I refer to virtual desktops and OVER-provisioning, I am describing something like when you give 4 GB of memory to a windows VM... Depending on the applications the user runs, all of the memory will get paged and reserved to the applications and OS virtual machine, even though only, say, 2 of the 4GB of memory are actually actively being used... An extreme example of poor optimization, but we are talking about EA's servers here...

Huh... my company uses the exact opposite meanings of over-provisioned and under-provisioned. When we say a server is over-provisioned, we mean that too many VMs have been created on it, so there aren't enough resources to go around.

i see the problem. One person is talking about how much memory/power to use.. while the other is talking about how many products/things are connected to the server .

                        Both are right.

The only way to test whether or not we crash here more is to move and find out.

You are wrong, our host is terrific.

Every Admin and every GSP is having problems with their servers, or to be clear every 64 player server admin with a server as full as ours is having problems.

I could put a BF3 server on the moon, and if it was 64 players and very busy, it would dump players.

Most recently the problem is not crashing it is the EA servers dumping all our players. When you are playing and reconnect to the same map with the same tickets, etc. EA's backed server dumped you, our server never crashed.
