Can I plese get some pointers on how not to suck so bad?

    Hi Guys,

I tried multiplayer first time early Saturday morning and dropped out after a client side crash, and after half a game had a .67 K/D. So I thought, I can work with that and and figured I'd go to bed and over the next few days play the campaign to get used to the mechanics and then go on line after everything gets more stable. I finished the campaign and went on Cainslair last night for a few hours, and had a pretty horrible outing and now sport an incredible .21 K/D and feel totally pwned! This is probably the lowest K/D I've ever had in any game in 15 years!

It seems that I can hit a guy several times (see the little x) but then get one-shotted and die. I can fly a jet fine but cant hit the broadside of a barn (is the a lock-on?). I get in a helicopter as pilot and cant hit anything, get shot and die. I spawn on a squad mate in front of the enemy and die. Some maps seem impossible to survive without a vehicle (the one with all the islands).

I'm not sure if I truly suck, or whether it gets better as you unlock new weapons and battle packs, or if its because I saw all the maps for the first time, or if everyone on the server is just outside my league. I can be effective as support with a LMG or driving a tank, but am failing awfully at other roles.

Anyone have some useful pointers/tips on how to ramp up? Which class is best to progress in? How to drop flares or hit a target in an aircraft? Any help would be much appreciated. :-)

It is best to just jump in and play. As you gain experience you will get better. Join a CLR squad and talk to your squad mates. Remember a majority of the players have put in a lot of hours and have better weapons than you. It will take a while to level up to better weapons and equipment. Try to cap and defend flags drop ammo, med kits or repair equipment for more points. And remember the most important point is to have fun.

Just keep playing and squad up with good players as an average player I can always learn by watching others. Just get in there and log some hours and you will improve, don't look at the stats. As for the killing part wit the vanilla settings I just keep firing at the head and hope I get head shot in.

Oh, I had fun, but I feel like a liability to my team when I only get 1-2 kills per match and die 10 times! I did better in the beta. I also only heard one other guy with a mic (or at least who talked). Can you communicate with your team on just your squad?

You can type to the team but the VOIP is in squad and the commander.

I agree with all said above. I can't barely hit anything with a jet or heli..... and phantom keeps calling me blind.
Once you get a grip and decent scope on a gun you will do better. Stick to one kit and unlock things at first. You will also get used to the weapons. Learning the maps will take time and you will learn them. Remember in a couple of weeks we get a whole bunch of maps we have never seen
Remember in the single player the toons just sat there and basically waited for you to fire at them.

Yeah. I like it when they sit still and pop their heads up. Gun unlocks were faster in SP too. I think a lot of these maps are a little more confined and CQC than BF3 and BFBC2 and BFBC2 Vietnam - I really miss Vietnam...BFBC2 was my first BF game and Vietnam was the first FPS MP I'd played on PC since COD 2, Unreal Tournament and Delta Force BHD in the late 1990's-early 2000's.

Because you freakin are! 6 infantry, 3 tanks, 2 jets, another heli and 2 boats... and Golden is spamming the gun at some shrubs 30 miles away from the target! Still fun as hell, though lol.

                    - Spot everything. You need to train your fingers to constantly move to Q and press it whenever you see something move in front of you. This helps you keep track of your target but it also calls any friendlies to your area to take down whatever you spotted. Even if you don't kill the target you still get points and are awarded for it. This goes whether you are in a vehicle or not.

                    - Play your class. If you are assault you should be dropping med kits like they were on fire every time you see a friendly. Same with support. Drop those supply boxes. A sniper fired a single shot? Flood him with ammo. If you are playing recon use that PLD. USE IT! USE IT! USE IT! PLD should actually never leave your loadout until you are sure you are contributing with other gadgets as you unlock them. Engie? Repair everything and anything. See a friendly vehicle? Hop on board and repair. And don't be afraid to use your rockets. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

                    - For vehicle advise, if you are not confident driving on your own, be a gunner to a tank, boat or chopper. The good thing about BF4 now is that you actually unlock items for your own vehicles by just being the passenger. Go engie and repair! Collect those points!

                    - And above all don't worry about K/D ration in Large Conquest. It's all about the objective. Stick to your squad, talk to them, and follow orders. If you don't have a good squad, leave and join another. But play the objective. I've seen players have horrible K/D ratios, or go 0 - 0, but with impressive scores.

Patience too. Rushing in isn't going to give you much experience.

I have a write up that I did a while back. Most of it pertained to BFBC2, but a lot of the tactics are static. I'll see if I cannot get my friend to send it my way, and I'll post it up.

How the game changes in every map:

It's all about teamwork. Battlefield hardly rewards K/D ratio, it's an old FPS concept at gauging people's skill level. Battlefield is all about capturing points and holding them. Team > Individual. A squad that works together will dominate.

Example: last night, flying around with Batiste repairing or rocketing targets, we both got 12k points. Thats a 2 man squad garnering almost a full squad's average points(20-25k total for a decent squad). We kept Alpha and Bravo/Charlie clear on Flood Zone. The little bird does it's job, which is to patrol, catch infantry not in cover, and deny air superiority(at least on that map). If you own the air, you can switch to laser guided missiles and also deny the enemy armored vehicles as the little bird is fantastic at taking out armored targets. Add a repair engie and that map becomes ridiculously easy to control. (Other squad mates can spawn and the bird can drop them off)

2nd Example: also last night, my squad had a tank and was mostly engineers. One of us, forget who, was using his EoD bot to repair our tank. Spotting and being methodical, we locked down most of Dawnbreaker. We easily got over 30-35k points. We scored about 10+ vehicle kills, with easily a combined 50+ infantry kills. The tank was the bait, and also the trap as our EoD bot kept it up, tank + gunner shredded people.

                          Spotting

Press Q to spot targets. (Note this does not work in HC mode, it's pretty much useless)

You can easily get 500 points from just spotting an entire round. It's cheesy but it's about teamwork. Oh look a recon boat, spot it, let someone with rockets/air to ground missiles/armor take them out.

Q also gives orders if you're squad leader. Attack this point, Defend this point, etc. Easy points as squad leader.

                          Infantry

When short range, don't bother using iron sights... the delay is a killer.
Medium/Long Range - use iron sights/attachment and adjust for bullet drop. There's quite a bit past 30 yards or so. A lot of attachments can help with bullet drop, muzzle flash, accuracy, and recoil.

Supply team mates. Ammo is free.
Heal team mates. It's free, drop the box...
Rez team mates. Keep that fight going. GET UP SOLDIER, HERE's A MEDKIT, FIX YOURSELF UP

                          Vehicles

Learn to use overdrive and always be mobile. C4 will teach you this very quickly.
You're a sitting duck not moving. I can't count the number of times C4 has taken me out because I couldn't just
                          keep moving.

Don't rush. Vehicles dominate on Conquest. Getting blown up is easy... being cautious and methodical will reward you significantly more. Honestly, the only time I rush anything is if it's a HVT. Something that's really keeping one team in a dominant position.

IE: they have the artillery truck and someone who knows how to use it. That thing will deny armor on a lot of maps, even taking out the occasional infantry if they are dumb enough to be spotted and not move.

Tanks - Don't rush, you're a giant target for rockets, C4, mines, and other anti-armor.
APC - Rush. But don't take on other armor unless you want to lose. The unlocks for this are great, Zuni rockets will win armor fights.
Jeep - fast, so don't take anything, it's too easy to get killed in it.
MRAP - fast, only good vs infantry
Scout Heli - fast, maneuverable, but light armor and pretty awful air to air capability unless you love carrying heatseekers which are really only useful at shooting down other helicopters.
Attack Heli - power house if people know how to use it. A good pilot + gunner can dominate any heavy armor oriented maps. Especially with a good setup of laser missiles and gunner spotting etc.
Jets - useless other than fighting other jets and the occasional attack jet bombing. They can deny airspace but honestly, they can be pretty difficult to use and any good pilot will flare away missiles.
Recon Boat - fantastic naval power. It has everything you need for water to ground weapons. 30mm + Zuni + Active Protection system is crazy good for keeping enemy boats dead. Add 2 minigunners denying air and ground... crazy effective squad vehicle. Spot 4 can repair the boat but only if you manage to hit a gun mount with the repair tool.
Transport Heli - slow moving + mini-guns, it can be hit and miss in terms of usefulness. It's a giant floating target.

                          Commander

It's hard to play Commander. You have a lot of tools but also you're heavily reliant on your folks also being good.
You can't cap points if people don't follow orders or the strategy being employed.

AC130 is very good. But only guns 1 and 2. Gun 3 might aswell be empty.
                          Cruise Missile, amazing vs armor.
Supplies - really good to keep repairs going on armor
                          Scans - Best commander ability
EMP - Best anti-commander ability. Deny their scans.

                          Rest is pretty weaksauce.

I have yet to figure out what key / what function allows me to speak to commander.

Does it automatically talk to the Commander when you are SL and push the PTT key?

I think that he has to select your squad to talk to and you will know this when his name on you screen is green
