I can get from place to place in BF2. I can't even get 15 feet off the pad in BC2/Vietnam because the mouse pitch and yaw sucks. Half the time I even try to take off, I'm 90 degrees vertical within 3 seconds. Maybe I need to try keyboard arrows for that.

Check the sensitivity of your mouse. you may have an overly sensitive mouse.
Of course that may be for the best in this PC correct world.
