    Little help with BC2 Updater?

This is my first post - I know Cain personally and after upgrading my rig, he convinced my to jump back into PC gaming after a few years playing only xbox 360 games. Now I'm having major problems installing BCBF2 on my new Windows 7 rig.

Purchased BFBC2 and confirmed box says Windows XP, Vista and 7. Initial installation took forever, but it worked. Problem happened when I tried to play and got the notification that I needed to update and the Autoupdater came up. I started the update and it starts okay but fails half way through the update saying that a file is missing and do I want to play the old version. Here are the things that I thought could be issues.

    1. Installation went to the programs(x86) directory and not the programs directory ? don?t know if that makes a difference. Should I re-install to a separate ?games" directory to see if that might work?
    2. On installation it asked if I wanted to install and verify online (so I wouldn?t need the disc) or use disc verification. I chose online.
    3. Asked about Punkbuster. I told it to install it since I plan to play on Cainslair.
    4. Tried to install by going into directory and running the updater there directly. Same issue - stalled halfway through and said a file was missing.
    5. I have Steam installed, so I don?t know if that causes issues or conflicts.

This is litteraly the first thing other than iTunes and Steam I've installed on this new PC so haven't dealt with compatibility issues yet. System specs: Dell XPS 8300 w/Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Intel iCore7 2600 at 3.4 ghz, 8 Gb DDR3 RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5870 video, 1 Tb 7200 RPM HD, cable internet at about 5MB/sec.

thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks in advance for any help.

      Hi Savage13,

I didn't have that problem, but I can provide some answers. Please post back here with your results.

      1. That shouldn't be a problem.
      2. & 3. Good.
      4. Good (problem is reproducible)
      5. That shouldn't be a problem.

You're not the only one with trouble. I found this comment on-line:
"It recently took me probably 20 tries to get a recent patch installed. Shame on EA for not just letting us download the patch file and install manually. It might help to run the updater as an administrator and to make sure your computer isn't going to sleep while it's updating."

      A. You can try updating again with that advice.

      B. If Step A fails, and if you haven't already done this step, I would uninstall the game, reboot the PC, & reinstall again. After uninstalling, it might be good to delete the original game folder and then choose a different directory instead of "programs(x86)". I made a top level "games" directory for everything most important to me.

      C. If the problem is still there, here's is a link to the very large patch from EA.
      http://static.cdn.ea.com/dice/u/f/bf...2574_Patch.exe

      (found on this page http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/batt...pany-2-pc.aspx)

      D. If that works, after that works, you might still need to run latest PBsetup.exe from http://www.evenbalance.com (punkbuster).

Thanks Minerva for the welcome and Qicmee for the tech advice. I've been getting some e-mails directly from Mr. Cain as well (though he is less helpful :-)). I'll try the possible fixes tonight and post an update. I was planning on installing everyting in a new directory anyway (c:\games\), and I would always delete the crud left over after an uninstall. Having never started the game yet, I have no save files to lose. Not sure how one runs the "updater as an administrator" but I'll look into it. Maybe its a right click thing? Or inside the game. We'll see. I may try letting the game in original unpatched version run first just to see if it loads and starts before trying the other options. Again, thanks and hope to see you on the server soon. Otherwise, look me up on XBOX live gamertag Savage13 John said his updater on a recent friends install only took 20 minutes, so I don't know. cross fingers.

          All good.
"updater as an administrator" - Depends on how you're setup as a user. We want to avoid the situation of updates trying to save to a directory where only an administrator has authority to write. You are correct that in Win7 you can right-click on the program and then choose ?Run as administrator?. I'm still running WinXP, so this hasn't bothered me yet.

Bonus info - The latest patch downloads all of the maps & content for Vietnam (that's what we play here), regardless of whether you've activated it. This is several GB of data. I let it run overnight.

Latest patch only contains content and maps for Vietnam, correct? I take it I still would need to buy the Vietnam addon for the game at the EA store (assuming I get the BFBC@ gamet o install)?

Each patch is comprehensive. The latest patch is all you need. (as far as I know)

The patch will preload the DLC to your PC without allowing access. This seems odd to me, but it makes activation very quick after you buy it from EA. It's not quite as odd as games that include locked DLC on the original disk.

Um...don't know how to say this, but Doh!!!

I started the auto updater when I left for work today, and expected to get the same errors when I returned home. Instead I found a message saying that bfbc2 has been successfully updated and do I want to start the game. The only thing I can think of is that the servers are busy and slow late at night and my download timed-out because it took so long. Maybe the servers were less busy at 630 a.m. And it went through. So sorry for the fire drill. Thanks so much for trying to help, but I think it worked out okay. I'll try firing up the game tonight and make sure everything else works okay.

Why, are you anticipating I'll screw up the install of the addon now

i'm confused... can't he just update it all on steam and steam will do all the work for him?

Either that or steam has officially made me lazy and dumb lol.

First, problem resolved itself. Nothing to see here.

Second, it was being installed from a disk. Steam was only mentioned as a possible complication.

Eventually, I might experience a problem with Steam, but I haven't so far.
