Soo... after updating to SP3 I am unable to play COD4... I try to start the game and get the "Unrecoverable Error". I have re-installed the game and re-installed directX (DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)) and it seems to be ok (I did the tests using dxdiag... I'm not running XFIRE and my Video Card drivers are the same as when it ran (plus there aren't any newer ones)... any one have any suggestions to get it working?

Good freakin' luck is all I can say ... I have this same problem on my laptop and I have spent COUNTLESS hours trying to fix it. In my opinion, it is unfixable on my particular setup.
I guess you are lucky enough to get it running in the first place. I am just trying to get CoD 2 (not 4) to run PERIOD on my old laptop.
Details:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+
ATI 9700 Pro video card
I've tried numerous official ATI drivers, Omega drivers, 3rd party modded, new ones, old ones, DX updates, and I do NOT have X-fire installed. You name it, I've tried it. "DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error. Check the readme for possible solutions."
It's running on an Intel Core Duo (2.0 GHz) 2 GB Ram, NV GeForce 7300 (256MB) Inspiron 6400.
It's pretty weird... I really hope I can get it working again... There must have been something going from SP2 to SP3 that broke my direct X.. The only problem is I don't really want to go back to SP2 just to find that it doesn't work there anymore either This SUCKS!

Here's an update:
No problems found.
DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 7 test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 6 (No hardware supported display modes found): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 6 (No hardware supported display modes found): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Looks like a video card problem... I've just learned that NVIDIA has a beta driver for my video card and the newest dell one is from 2006... Might give it a try and see where it takes me.

I got it working!!!! soo... I do feel kinda stupid right now... but at least it's working.

I never actually got to updating the drivers.. the problem was with the NVIDIA power saving feature "Extend Battery Charge by using less power for the display".. apparently by activating this feature, the video card is limited to only directx 7... and doesn't work with 8 and 9.... It's part of the "PowerMiser" settings in the NVIDA control Pannel!!!!... Now I just have to update my game again.. at least I backed up my profile!
.... YAAAAA HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Nice work !
I'd like to say mine's fixable, but it isn't. I pass all DX tests but no go. A few games actually run fine, but not CoD.Oh if a man tried to take his time on Earth and prove before he died what one man's life could be worth, well I wonder what would happen to this world ? - Harry Chapin
