Also TFC, DOD and now TF2 - They have hundreds of QUALITY maps that have kept the games going for a long time.

If stat tracking/ranking is available, people ALWAYS default to it. I'm not sure to this date that any game has bucked this trend. When people stop caring about golden guns, ranks, unlocked weapons and completing challenges, THEN we can enjoy the custom maps. The longer the game is around, the higher the likelihood of this occurring. It's going to be a while, even if it does eventually happen.

You can rest assured that once the DEV tools are out and maps start popping up everywhere, there will be a lot of maps that are approved and some not.

Does RAM help you load maps faster? I have TWO hard drives, tons of free space but I almost always join the battle long after its already started.

I leveled to 55 and unlocked all gear (not all challenges, only the ones that give gear) in the course of a few days on one of those FFA Shipment servers, with only a few hours on other servers to get unlocks like Goodbye etc. If you're serious about ranking and unlocking gear then you seriously need to spend time on those servers as even a noob will get double the kills that a top player will get playing TDM at the Lair.
In terms of ranking, I can't imagine anyone who's a Lair regular giving a damn about their rank, with all the deaths from random nades, noobtubes etc. This ain't UT!
P.S. I can't believe it but UT2k4 has the 6th-highest number of active players according to Gamespy's stats, behind CS/CS:S, BF2, BF2142 and COD4. What a classic, and what a shame UT3 didn't take off!
