Ok, how do you get gold-plated weapons? I have the pimp desert eagle, but I am clueless as to how people are running around with pimped out shotguns and LMGs

Is it a headshot thing like the blue tiger and red stripes?

It is a pain in the XXXXX to get the golds.

I've just about given up on getting them except for the shotty.
There are some guns that just SUCK, so if you want your K/D
ratio to bottom out, go for it.

Seriously, I have probably the worst K/D of anyone playing regularly
here at the Lair. It isn't a big deal to me. If I can break even on a
round, I'm happy. (And since I like to charge for funzies, I'm usually
the bullet magnet for all the campers, making it easier for the
people following me in. )

So I've gone back mostly to playing with my favorite weapons.
Just so hard to get head shots with some weapons.

Great KUDO'S for those that do go through the painful process for the
golds.

Well I have completed all but 2 assault rifle weapons. I am working on the G36C almost done with expert 2 then need to finish expert 3. And the last one is the MP44 which I am half way completeing expert 1. When I am done with the above I should have my golden AK47. It has been a long road to complete each challenge for each class of assualt rifles and I wanted too give up several times and say the heck with the golden AK47, But I stuck it out and I am glad I did. I will say the MP44 will be the hardest I think as the recoil is nasty and its hard to keep the sights on your target. The second hardest weapon for me was the G3 as it was great for those long distance shots but it was hard to kill someone close up as the fire rate was slow and there was no way you were going to dust off more than one player at a time when the other guy's were using full auto weapons on you and I died way more than I needed too because of it. It was a relief to complete all challenges for the G3.:P I used some of the perks for the weapons and they helped some other perks were not all that great. You just have to pick which one works the best for you.
