    Help with LMGs

Very recently, i started using LMGs and enjoyed it greatly. I only just got the gold m60 but never really picked up how to play with them. I am asking for tips on how to user them, at what distance are they lethal and perks and setups would be greatly appreciated as well.

    Thanks for the help guys

not always, you don't have the button to throw the gun at someone's head?

I find the LMGs to be the weakest of the 5 weapon classes, due to their poor accuracy and the fact that they slow your movement the most of all the weapon classes (mobility is key in COD4 with all the nade spam).

That being said the RPD seems to have the best combination of accuracy, rate of fire and damage of the guns, the M60 has big damage but is basically uncontrollable while the SAW just doesn't do enough damage. If I'm carrying an LMG I'm basically planning to sit and spray, so I load out the RPD with red dot, Bandolier, Stopping Power and Deep Impact. Bandolier is key to me as you'll want to look for spray'n'pray type situations when you're carrying the LMG, and being able to sit on full auto for 10 seconds or more is invaluable. Plus the BRD's rate of fire is so high that a double tap is basically instantaneous, and with Stopping Power those 2 rounds will kill anyone even with Juggernaut (if I remember my LMG math correctly).

To get a similar setup with the M60 I'd use the grip instead of Bandolier to improve accuracy, and Double Tap instead of Stopping Power to make up for the slow rate of fire. With the SAW I'd use Double Tap instead of Stopping Power to crank up the damage-per-second.

In general, I agree with Karson. My feeling about the LMGs is that except for the large clip, the LMG class can be out-performed in every tactical situation by a gun of a different class.

However, we end up using them differently. I find the LMGs most lethal at long distances, but that's because I don't like leaving my shots up to prayer. I also didn't like that when running around, I had to compete with people who could run faster and further, and had higher ROF.

So I ended up using stopping power + deep impact and hanging back. I would use the M60 because of it's increased power. Even though it kicks more, each individual shot is more controllable. Unless I was taken by surprise by someone up close, I'd never hold the trigger but squeeze out single shots as if it were semi-auto.

Anyway, I guess my take-home message is that the LMG is versatile and can be set to work in various situations. If you have 150 headshots with each weapon, you've probably got a good idea how to use it

all I know is in my opinion the M60 sucks compared to RPD and SAW. I don't get how people make it so accurate, mine recoils like hell.

RPD... where has it been all my life? Complete ownage and I was able to get 44 headshots with it in an hour

If you're observant and can be a team player even without communication (i.e. see your teammates trying to take over a building or something) you can use the LMG's to great effect for suppressing fire. An RPD or M60 also makes quick work of helicopters.

I tend to gravitate towards either a designated marksman/sniper role (M16, R700) or a specops role (suppressed P90, UAV jammer), but there are definitely times where I'll pull out the LMG because it's needed.

                We agree to disagree.

I find the M60s dmg more than makes up
for slow ROF. I use it with overkill and
                deep impact. With an SMG.

Vacant and M60 is just awesome at the
place that I found. Switch to SMG when
it is abit hairy and no time to reload. You
can area deny a door or corridor with
                zero.sweat. Shoot through walls,
and basically have a lot of fun.

Overgrown has 2-3 nice places for the
M60 also. RPD is a nice compromise.

Carry the SMG to run with. Switch to
                LMG when you are setup.

I don't usually last long enough to worry
about running out of ammo. ROFL

Ok I will the first to tell you that you can pick my LMG and I will whoop

your butt. I don't know what your talking bout being in accurate. I got all

my headshots with them easy. LMG was the funnest weapon class for me.

Like any weapon, I only do 3-5 round burst and that means one kill every

burst. They were really accurate for me. And for the funning slowing me

down, pull out your pistol and problem solved. You run faster with your

pistol out. Then camp the guy chasing you. If you need help with your

guns, use red dot or grip. That's all you really need.

                    M60+grip+deep impact = killing spree

I use it instead of sniper rifle for long distance mowing down of players. One or two bullets enough to kill anyone except Juggernaut which needs maybe 4. If you don't shoot more than 3 or 4 bullets there is little or no recoil and as far as strafing buildings....no weapon is better except the turrets.

I rather enjoy using the M60. Up close I don't have to much success with it because of the slow ROF. From longer distances if I can see it I can hit it, normally ending up with a lot of assists, but they help.

I'll echo the suggestion for stopping power and deep impact. Basically you're trying to maximize the LMGs strengths as a medium/long-range weapon best used for suppressive fire. L_Mo is mostly right about each individual class being at least somewhat better in a particular way to the LMGs.

Sniper Rifles and the some Assault Rifles are marginally better at long range compared to the LMGs (of course at extreme ranges the sniper rifles win by a wide margin). At Medium ranges, the LMGs are about equally matched to most Assault Rifles. In CQC, SMGs and shotguns can overpower an LMG user unless they are using Double Tap (which hinders the LMGs medium/long-range capabilities).

But considering all these ranges and factors, the LMGs are the jack-of-all-trades weapon. You'll beat rifle users with the sheer number of bullets up close (and your ability to shoot through walls). You'll beat SMG users at medium long ranges easy, and you've got at least a fighting chance at midrange against assault rifle wielders. While they aren't as good in any particular area as a more specialized weapon, you'll at least have a fighting chance at every range. Plus you excel at suppressive fire, which can be very helpful for your team if used properly.

As for which LMG is best? My personal fav is the RPD....its practically an auto G3/M14. I can't stand the SAW - too much recoil for too little damage (staying on target is better than shooting a lot of bullets real fast off target). M60 is a beast, but it can be hard to handle at longer ranges (and reload time on that thing is nearly an eternity).

Here is the way I see it: LMG's are good if you have a slow computer or if you like sitting back and covering people. I personally love the LMG's. My favorite is the SAW due to its incredible accuracy if you use the handle. It might as well be a large clip full auto sniper rifle then. If you use that with double tap and deep penetration, I find that it will do any long shot job you need. I love also using them (yes all of them) with the red dot sight from a distance. I personally like the LMG's better than sniper rifles or SMG's (except maybe the p90). I guess it all just comes down to how you like to play.

By no means is the SAW a bad weapon, it just doesn't fit my particular taste in weaponry. I don't use the iron sights on almost any weapon because most tend to obscure a significant portion of the screen (making it easier to lose your target when the weapon starts to climb due to recoil). This is especially true for the SAW and M60, and to a certain extent the RPD (though it's not as bad). If you can live with obscured view, the saw + grip is actually a pretty decent weapon due to its very high ROF.

If it works for you, go with it
