Unfortunate Truth About Steam + COD4

    Two things here:

I could not get it to auto update. I finally got a support response which asked me to back up all my player data and reinstall steam.

Second- after reinstalling, I cannot find ANY player data for COD4. Does anyone know what this file is named? I believe it isnt there, but I need to ask first. Im a pretty smart guy, with exception of my stupidity for using the client tool to back up player data rather than doing it manually.

This is the third time this has happend via Steam. Great service, for single player games, multi-player- nuh ugh. go buy a full version copy in the store from now on- as they seem to have a difficulty in distributing their updates.

I have associated some other games with Steam and also bought other games with Steam, and I've never had a problem. I think COD4 and Steam just don't mesh well, if that makes any sense.

COD hasn't gotten the hint of releasing the Steam patches and the regular patches at the same time... Bad for them.

Backing it up manually is the sure-fire way of keeping your data. Other than that, it's kind of hit-or-miss. As for Steam, I've never had a problem getting updates for any of my games, Valve or 3rd party. And the one time IW lagged in getting the patch out, I sought out and found a manual install method that treats the game exactly like the retail version which can be found here:

I'm inclined to believe something else is going on with your computer that is causing this lapse in Steam performance. Either a firewall setting, an overly aggressive anti-virus or anti-spyware, or possibly some sort of hardware problem (though I have no idea what). Have you reinstalled steam at all? I find that sometimes brings it back up to working condition if things go awry (even deleting the clientregistry.blob can prove useful on occasion as well, though you must relog into steam afterwards).

Sorry you're having so much trouble. Steam has always worked pretty well for me.

I am glad everyone loves steam. Fantastic. I am hoping that someone may help me identify the file that contains the profile fo your character.

I have already relegated the problem to the automated patch, and I did in fact identify the corruption point.

My problem now is that I have an entire set of files here, and I was hoping someone might help me save time and tell me where the profile data is stored so I can "pluck " it from this wash of mess.

I'll do it myself later on, but I really havent had much time as I am closing a global deal right now.

                Thanks,

                Hammy out!

                  No Problem Disgruntled Rodent

                  Try here:

                  C:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\cod4\players\profiles \Profile Name\mpdata

mpdata holds your stats, and the other files hold your configuration for single and multiplayer.

Just copy all three files to another directory, and there you go, you've now got a backup of all your data. To replace it, just copy the data back over and overwrite what is in there if your mpdata gets corrupted for some reason.

                  Hope that helps

Looking forward to getting shot by everyone in the near future.

But think how angry the l33t players are going to be because they are getting owned by a beginner.
