CoD4 - forced vacation due to tendinitis

Is there a doctor in the house ?????

For the past month, I have been having a pain in my right elbow that would be classified as 'tennis elbow' by most suffering from the affliction. And after playing CoD4 nightly for my usual 1.5-2 hours, I wake up the next morning and it is now to the point where it is throbbing and I have a hard time even bending it to brush my teeth.
It started spasming yesterday and when I bump it against something the pain is wearing me down. I try picking up a milk jug and it brings nothing but agony to me.

So at this point, after alerting the wife to my struggles, she (being the smart one) says 'You play that game every night .. don't you think that is causing it'? Hmmm, I thought .... that would suck if it were true. So I gave up on any gaming last night, an lo and behold, the swelling/spasms have abated.

It is with great pain (literally, I kid you not) that I temporarily hang up my trusty RPD and retreat to the M.A.S.H. unit for proper care and healing. I hope this is a temporary stay of no more than two weeks, but think of me when you are looking for an easy victim, and know that I would love to be in there mixing it up if at all possible.

At 39, my body is not doing me any favors, so enjoy your youth while you still have it. I hate going to the doctors, but gaming is surprisingly not easy on the body, and I hope that I recover fully in due time.

See you guys in a few weeks ...

i am so sorry you are suffering with this.

i have gotten to the point of having cortizone shots in the shoulders. not much fun. i will never get into the baseball hall of fame. but it helped.

Thanks, BA ! My Dad, who passed away in '00, always warned me about cortisone shots, and I am seriously afraid of needles, so I just need to stop playing games and pop some pills. I've had some other issues with my wrist, but each game affects me differently, and this one is just beating me with the pain. I've tried to blame other things, but knowing my past history with aches and various pains from gaming too much, I know what I need to do.

I'm sorry to hear that this is stemming (seemingly) directly coming from your gaming habits. May you have a speedy and full recovery, WalkinTarget.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that WT.

I hope you recover soon. I can understand your pain about the needles. While I certainly don't have a phobia or anything, I would rather that you keep them away from me.

On a side note, they are developing (still testing?) controllers that sense and read brainwaves to perform actions as opposed to pushing buttons. How cool would that be?

I wish I had that link for the article. It was a rather interesting read.

good luck with that WT, I'll miss you

"tennis elbow" is actually bursitis and can be quite painful. before I had my knee operated on I had a painful lump the size of a golf ball on top of it. don't let it get that bad!

I've had the cortisone shots too. you don't want those

have you looked into other keyboard/mouse styles, and your sitting posture? you'd be surprised how much difference it can make by changing a few little things.... (i have carpal tunnel and tendinitis...among other things)

Background info: I had been to the doctors about a year ago when my right hip was that bad that to step up into my SUV required teeth clenching effort and it was steadily getting worse.
An ultrasound determined that I had tendinitis in my right hip, lower back and right elbow. Hip and back aren't needed to play games, so they just 'chill out' while I'm gaming. The elbow, on the other hand, is constantly at play, moving the hand that moves the mouse in short jittery movements.
If you've ever seen me via the killcam, I have some funky erratic mouse movements that you wonder what the heck I am doing. The worse my elbow gets, the worse my aim is due to the spasms in the elbow saying 'STOP IT' !!

Day 2 without CoD and my elbow is markedly better. I need to look up bursitits which chef mentioned and see how that compares to my condition.

Many individuals with tennis elbow are involved in work or recreational activities that require repetitive and vigorous use of the forearm muscle.
It may not be the mouse causing your Tennis Elbow. But, it could definitely be aggravating it.
                      Get well.

Sorry to hear of your ailments...
Hope it dies down and you recover back to form.

I too suffer from various aches, pains, age related hurts.

Cortisone never really substantially helped me, but it does help
people with swelling and pinched nerves.

Taking time off from physical activity DOES help, as the irritation
just never has a chance to mellow out otherwise.

Take care of yourself, and come back and own me.

I understand you don't like shots, but they really will help if you could bring yourself to do it.

I've had steroid shots in my shoulder, my elbow, my spine and my foot. All of them have fixed me up except the ones in the spine. I had to have surgery there.

But with my elbow and shoulder, the shots worked VERY well. It's like 10 seconds of pain, followed by weeks of relief.

GAH! That sucks target. During my UT2k4 days I got all kinds of problems in my right shoulder and neck. I learned my lesson - a few pushups before I game to warm up. A few push ups after I finish a heavy session to loosen up any stiffness. It sounds like such a small thing but it helped a great deal.

                              Walkin-

I had a similar problem due to spending most of the day at work on a PC then playing games at night on a PC. What helped me was to place an additional mouse pad on my desk and to lay my elbow on that pad while I worked/played. Its been years since I've had that problem now and I spend upwards of 8 hours a day on a PC. It helped so much I put one under both arms, lol. The top of my desk is almost padded....
