    Redneck?

I used the mic and said "okay guys I gotta go nice playing with you all good game", and someone called me a redneck?

Ever since tayeke told me to plug it in I've been using it a lot so I wouldn't be surprised if people heard my voice, but do I sound like a redneck, or was this person a bit...."dee dee dee".

I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I've never really been called a redneck or southerner, just wondering. I mean, Oregons been known as the NORTH west

several of the regulars are from the south and have noticeable accents.

many of them use voice chat.

may just be that using chat on the server = redneck. No matter where you are from

Need to remember also, people hear accents differently.

Like to some people I'm Irish, to others I'm English, to others i sound like an American immigrant from Scotland...

It just depends what they expect certain people to sound like.

I'm not insane. I'm just overwhelming!

And someone once thought Sirex was me. Or was it the other way around?
I think Moe and I probably have the strongest southern accents on the server.

I've got a southern accent as well, but I sound educated, I think. Then again, some people may hear me and think they're hearing Boomhower (sp?) from "King of the Hill".

You don't sound like a redneck deadly i can vouch for that. A lot of people have something against mic's in this game. They either tell you to shut up or have a pop at you.

                  Redneck?

You know- That sound is unique to these United States, and though I am born and bred in California, I have a sincere problem with people who talk junk about the Southern accent.

I let out a chuckle whenever I hear someone make an uncomfortable comment like that.

I have two buddies in Atlanta who I work with, that whenever someone makes the dumbass obvious joke, say "Thanks for the complimnent- we were afraid that we might have begun to sound like a holes from the North."

                  THAT cracks me up everytime.

Yeah, I always like the people who start typing "stop talking" as soon as you use the in game chat. Those are the people whom I generally consider not to have the first clue...

You do do not have the accent of a redneck ( Southerner ) deadly. I feel that members of this community know that I have a heavy southern accent. and have been labed a redneck. I was born in Texas on Galveston Island so I guess since I have lived in Texas all my live it just went from there.

I used to have to work with Chicago, New York, etc...
And put extra into my Suthern Accent.

Especially NY would jump through hoops for me, just to hear me talk.

Some people have mistaken my voice as Moe's, which is fine and dandy.

Insults? Hey, I'm a referee, you have to bring something really special
to get a rise out of me. Too many people embarrass themselves by
using cheap, tired old insults. Is that their best shot? So sad.. hehehe

I lost some of my redneck accent when I moved to West Palm Beach for 7 years. I had to re-learn to annunciate so that others could understand me, and it went from being a habit (talking plainly) to where I didn't even think about it anymore. Since I left from Florida, I don't sound the same and I sometimes giggle when one of my buddies mumbles something slang that only us southerners understand.

Yeah, down in FLA. The northerners would always try to get me to talk. Needless to say, I picked up quite a few HOT dates just from my accent alone.

I was the webmaster for a popular hunting magazine a while back, and I was on the phone with one of the advertising companies and they poked fun at me because of a "Wild Hog" hunting article I put on the site. Anyway, they said something like... we know how you southerners like to hunt them there pigs in a pen.. poking fun at me. I said yeah and we know how you northerners like to come down here and hunt them brown goats (deer) and spend a pile of money on your fancy hunting equipment that doesn't help a bit.

First, I think we need to define what a redneck is, and differentiate that from "Southerner."

A redneck is often from the South, but doesn't have to be. Typically "redneck" means someone who is undereducated, unsophisticated and sometimes bigoted.

But a redneck is also often defined by his home. Many rednecks are pack rats and collect even worthless stuff, hence the stereotype of the yard full buried and painted tires, Christmas lights left hanging throughout the year, broken down cars up on blocks and old furniture on the front porch. I think most of that is a reflection of the poverty many rednecks grow up with. So even the most useless piece of crap (a brake rotor from a '73 Camaro, for instance) has value.

Rednecks are also defined by what they do for a living, usually meaning unskilled or low-skilled manual labor. Some would say an auto mechanic from the South is a redneck simply by virtue of his local and vocation. But I know a couple of auto mechanics who also understand the basics of quantum mechanics, so that's not particularly true, IMO.

But more often rednecks are defined by their attitudes: they don't care what others think about them (especially Yankees), they consider the finer things in life superfluous (Wal-Mart is THE place to be), and they often opine in a bigoted, ignorant manner on racial and ethnic issues (them Mexicans is stealing our jobs).

Me? I'm a Southerner, born and raised. But I also have a great education, a good job that requires advanced communication skills, and I can appreciate things that most rednecks cannot: fine arts, socio political discussion, gourmet cuisine, etc.

So am I redneck simply because I speak with a slight drawl? That's for everyone else to decide, but I do want to point out that calling someone a "redneck" is actually exhibition of one of the characteristics of being a redneck: bigotry.

When someone calls someone else a "redneck," it's done for the same reason a racist calls an African American the "N" word: it's because it makes them feel superior.
