Thats a really good point 413, I didn't think of that (damn me and being french and all haha). I always figured retarded was simply a slang used for mentally challenged. Something that was used a while ago when it was OK to use it, but these days, due to PC, its not ok.

And Mike, how do you know mentally challenged people would prefer not to be? Maybe they are totally happy the way they are and would not want to change for anything. We may want them to be, to fit whatever norm our society has about how we should act, but I'm not sure mentally challenged people would actually prefer anything different.

It's not the fact that you're calling a person gay, unless you do it in a manner that they find offensive. It's calling an object or idea gay, which usually denotes a negative connotation to it. I wouldn't call an idea gay to call it happy, I'd call it gay to say it was bad-stupid-retarded(don't kill me ). Personally, I don't mind so much unless people use it constantly. I really don't use it myself any more (used to quite a bit and I'll be the first to admit it) and it doesn't bother me if you do. Hell, call me gay all day long if you like....it won't change my sexual orientation (heterosexual btw) or annoy me :P I was just curious as to the official stance on the matter as I've seen it used and I know it can be taken badly.

Guess it should probably be in the community section now :P When I posted the question I was curious and thinking about seeing it on the CoD4 server, heh.

I'm not sure of it, but it really depends on the degree of retardation and if they are to the degree of being in a vegetative state. Of course someone who is mildly retarded and thinks normally, (eyes far apart, thick tounge), like yourself (j/k). I'm sure they are self conscious about it.

If you were doing something I didn't like... in a round about way I would not directly be calling you GAY, but if I said "That is so gay" ... It could be taken that I was calling you gay for doing what you did.

Anyways I really can't see any homosexual folks getting angry over the word. In effect what your trying to say when you say "you are gay" is "I think being gay is a bad thing. You are gay therefore you are bad". Most of my homosexual friends when told by someone that "they're so gay" say something like..."Why thank you". Because they don't see being gay as a bad thing. Actually what your saying when you say "your gay" is "I don't like gay people".

I do. When on admin duties, I must read and pay attention to all the chat going through, not just VOIP.

When not on admin duties, I realise that not everyone has or wants to use a mic, thus they use the text chat. Not paying attention to text chat means that I could miss some vital information being passed through, whether from the Commander, Squad Leader or Team mates.

I guess its just a force of habit now.

I think the discussion point is a very good one. Its great to discuss things like this with fellow CLRs, on a more intellectual type of level. You don't have to partake in the discussion if you don't want to.

lol, I pay more attention to the chat than to the game. I do enjoy playing the game a lot, but read and type quickly, so the in-game chat is fun to play with. I can get a decent score even while typing the whole time. Ask WalkinTarget or Kan/LiddYte, or anyone really who has played with me. I'm constantly chattering about how nice a kill was, how I wanted to kill someone but missed the chance, got killed in a funny or surprising way, all kinds of things. I also don't pick very good places to stop and type... typekills are frequent on me, but I don't mind since I know I'm stopping in stupid places.

I use the term sometimes, mainly as a synonym for lame, but I don't type it in chat. Actually I don't use chat or even read it most of the time other than to say "gg" or "ltr guys I gott go."
