After trying everything...including uninstalling vid drivers and reinstalling from original disk, I think that I might have fixed it by turning off the "sync every frame" option in graphics settings...at least it hasn't frozen on screen yet. With that off, I could bump anti-aliasing and other things back up, and it seems to work ok now (in case anyone else is having probs: you might want to try it).
