    Fallout 3 Crashes

I cannot find, but I do recall, a section or line of conversation where someone or a few people were having an issue with the game crashing all the time.

I have my copy via STEAM and suddenly the game is having issues all the time.

Anyone else have this problem and then conquer it?

The game just stops working, and an error comes up.
    I'm using Vista btw.

      hmm

I did have a few random crashes. There was one building (maybe chrysalis [something on the northeast side of map]) that would crash the game after I was in it for a bit. I remember seeing some of the ants like in the floor and such...kind of a glitch. Eventually I just gave up on trying to get experience points from that building, as there were no bobbleheads or anything too important in there.

I haven't played for a bit now, because I'm stuck in some huge hotel that I got into by jumping from another building (a couple floors up)...and now have a mission from some guys trapped on the roof to find a fission battery so they can take the elevator down to safety (after I've already killed every damned super mutant in the building). Anyway, I spent hours running around the place, not being able to locate the battery or the way out of the pit! So I kind of gave up. (I did finish the game once, but without ever even knowing about megaton, bobbleheads, etc...so I tried it again, with different perks).

Anyway, as usual, my words are probably of little assistance... Sorry, man.

My Fallout 3 was running OK until I showed my Father in Law the game, and I basically was on the last mission and went berzerko nuts on all of the good guys in the Citadel fortress.
I blew them all away with a MIRV, then after aborting the saved progress I was unable to launch the game again without an immediate crash.

I've basically not played it even once since then, and I'm guessing that was the first week of January, so its been awhile. In the meantime, they released a patch which I updated to, and darned if it didn't fix the immediate crash !!

Now, by fix, I mean that my game didn't crash as soon as I opened the saved games list. I never even tried to load my last saved game, but I will have to at least try it tonight and say whether its working or not.

Pretty basic and I know you've read this by now, but did you install anything with a codec pack since then ? I even removed Securom from my PC, so I'm not sure the game should even be working anyhow, as it only does a DVD check at startup unless you've shortcutted to the Fallout3.exe file.

I've checked everything...I tried all the robots and toolboxs and stuff first. I might go back and try it again someday. I've got some of those damned batteries in my love nest, but didn't carry one around because they're like 10 or 15 pounds. Anyway, after running around so long, digging through everything, I just ended up shooting walls and things until I finally gave up!

I can tell you where it is.

In the room that has catwalks that drop into an open room, there is 3 doors and a closet. In that closet, laying on top of a fallen shelf rack, is a robot. The colors are such that unless you actually look in there you probably wont "see" it.

              RE: SAVE GAME Data

I'm wondering where this stuff is. If I can find that, I will copy it over into another folder and then just kill the game. Then reinstall it and add the data back in to see if that solves the problem.

if your last saved game keep crashing, why dont load a different saved game and start from there. then after u play a bit re-load back to your last saved and it might load again. i had same problem before and thats how i fix it.

Ruthless, if your reply was directed towards me, it isn't the saved game, its the actual screen where you see every saved game, and before I can even SELECT one of them, it crashes.
I mean, within four seconds of getting to that screen, without clicking on ANYTHING, it freezes.

If i were you i would see if the installer has a "repair install" option and do that...

i was responding in general to everyone but u said it crashes outta nowhere? boom? gone? no error msgs?. im not sure why that would happen. maybe try verifying your game files on steam. u have the steam version correct?? or try google fallout3 crashes, another thing to do is reinstall which i know its a hassle.

                            verified, cache cleaner, defrag, etc.

                            All check marked

Here is how you solve the random stoppage problems (or at least how I did it).

                            Start from last save point.
                            Enter a transition door.
                            Hit ESC.
                            Save Game.
                            Exit Game.
                            Restart.

Seems to be a problem with Quicksave, Save Game and etc. that is destabilizing the entire game. I also notice artifacting as well as blurried PiP Boy writting on the casing, not the LCD on the PiP.

The other thing I did was set all the settings to default after I reloaded the game. I played 3 hours yesterday without a crash, where I was crashing 2- 4 times an hour prior to these changes.
