So true about professions making or breaking you.
Engineering is for YOU, not a money maker.
Enchanting rarely makes money, and is in fact a black hole
for the most part. Tailoring can make some money.
Skinning/Leather is OK, and there are a zillion things to
skin out there. Blacksmithing is a break even at best profession.

I have a miner/herb gatherer that is my money maker.
Epic flappy, and is a lock, so can take care of itself.

Raw ore. for instance 20 admantite ore sells for 20-25g.
Netherweave sells for 2.5-4g per 20.
Herbs sell GREAT. 5g to 40g per 20 count on high level herbs.
(Note: You can make money on low level herbs also, as some people
like to power level their alt toons, and don't want to waste time farming.
Lower level ores, herbs, and cloth sell like hotcakes, as people are
    power leveling their professions)

Just from questing, you can make 100g an hour, not counting
the ores/herbs you pick up on your travels. Then the drops
you get from NPC's, and put in AH, you can make 2-300g's for
an hour a day play. Get really serious, and in 2-3hrs, you
can make +500g's. Any Armor/weapons that don't sell in AH, I
send to my tailor/enchanting toon, who then DE's it. Arcane dust, a
basic in alot of things, sells for 2-5g a PIECE. 1 armor piece can DE to
as many as 5 arcane dusts.

But there is always someone that doesn't "Farm", or does nothing but
PVP. They NEVER have any gold, and have trouble even repairing after
an instance. But it is what they enjoy, so who am I to throw stones.

As I leveled up alts, I avoided areas that were hard to solo, or required
groups. i still got decent equipment and gold buildups. I personally Rarely
if ever bought anything from the AH. What I wore was what I picked up
in instances or drops. Tailor could make some armor for cloth wearers.

There are those that have to have the biggest sword, best enchant, stats heavy armor, etc... If they don't have time or inclination to farm for the
gold or mats (Materials), then buying gold would be very attractive.
Then again, those are the first people that Google for cheat codes as
soon as they get a single player game. :P

I agree with everything you typed but this

Enchanting rarely makes money, and is in fact a black hole
Just because of what you typed here.

      Arcane dust, a
basic in alot of things, sells for 2-5g a PIECE. 1 armor piece can DE to
as many as 5 arcane dusts.
On my lock I am a miner / enchanter. I can't tell you how much money I make in tips, and de'ing gear for myself and other people. You can sell a stack of Arcane Dust for 35 g easy.

I make a ton of money going back to the older instances and selling older enchanting mats. They go for a lot of gold because people can't get them as easy as the stuff from Outlands.

On my server Large Brilliant Shards and Greater Enternal Essence sell for a lot. Same with Illusion dust.

The biggest sink and black whole profession wise to me is black smithing and engineering.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
