Their stupid patcher has been trying to install the 2.4 GIG patch for almost 5 hours. Good thing they're opening up a day tomorrow for those stuck on their lame patch program.

That's not a good way to make a first impression.

That sucks that this is happening ofr you...I did not receive any issues whatsoever with the game or the patch client...the 2.4gb patch dll'ed and installed for me in 20min
So I played for about 4-5 hours yesterday. The ground parts remind me quite a lot of Knights of the Old Republic, only not quite as fun, while the space combats (which are kinda cool) are similar to games like Sins of a Solar Empire. What I'm actually most interested in, since they didn't give us the awesome ships and weapons in the beta to try yet, is the intervening history between the end of the various series and when this game picks up, which we see snippets of in the load screens.
I'm also a little curious and a little worried about the developers. Here's why: they tell us in the beta that their game times are something like 8am until 11pm PST--Pacific Standard Time--right? So why is it I'm seeing "shut down in 15 minutes" at 10:45pm EST--Eastern Standard Time--last night? And why is it the server goes dark at 11 EST?
Can't these guys tell time or figure out the 3-hour time difference between EST and PST? Do you folks really want to pay $15 a month for a game by developers, who need to be really good with numbers, who can't tell time?

Yea Ive put close to 7hrs in myself and I absouletly loe the game....I did not think that it would be able to "get" me but it has...I pre-ordered it last night. As far as server shut down time...Im wondering if it was just the instance of the server that you were on that was shut down because I was playing late last night and I logged close to 12am EST and the server was still up.
As far as the ships go, you need to earn them by getting to lvl 11 then if you have enough saved up you can buy a better ship. I spent allot of my time doing quests that would reward you with "Uncommon" mods for my ship and customised it pretty good. I go into battle with my Quantum Torpedoes and upgraded Phaser/Shield arrays and I can usually survive when I have 4-5 enemies on me. It all comes down to the different Bridge Officer combinations you have and you need to skill them up accordingly. I found that it almost does you better to sacrifice lvlling pts from yourself and apply it to your team.
If you pre-order now you get a head start on everyone else before it is publibly released...so by the time it is released, the USS Cain's Lair (yes Im advertising us in STO ) will be pwning all the noobs LOL
I'm definitely not going to buy it; refuse to play any MMO. They just have me for the next two weeks, while it's still a free beta. And I was annoyed to see they are going to reset the player base twice--this will affect you more than me.
They're resetting at the start of the open beta in a few days, and then again right before the pre-order exclusive play period. I'll be affected by the open beta reset, so unless I cram in a bunch of exp missions, I won't see the better ship class before then, and may not want to replay a bunch of stuff after it.
I'm not playing the open beta in all likelihood. This game is tedious; I only made it to level 8 before the wipe and I'm not looking forward to going over the same boring set of missions again. If for some reason I log in and they didn't wipe, maybe I'll play long enough to get level 11 and a new ship, but I doubt they didn't wipe the player base yesterday.
This type of grind is not for me. Every time I ended up in a system and had to "defeat 5 squadrons" and every time I had to beam down to someplace, I just sighed, because it was exactly the same thing every time.
