EA decided to put SecuROM DRM on it, check out the reaction here, some of them are rather entertaining. Spore's average rating on Amazon is only 1.5 stars due to this.

I am having alot of fun with the game. First run through has been pretty easy though.
Not sure on the replayability of the game. I went full on predator/military the first time, going to try and different route to see how the game plays out.
If you like Sim type games, this one is a great pickup[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

Bioshock and Mass Effect used the same DRM system, and pirated downloads of both were freely available. Pirated downloads of Spore were actually available before it was on store shelves.
Glad to see all that DRM is working!

assuming EA doesnt pay the gaming magazines to hype up spore's rating (highly unlikely), spore should win the "Biggest Flop Award of 2008". This game BY FAR sucks, incredibly too simple, made for an eight year old, and your species stats almost completely dont matter. If u have a species with 6 arms and 4 legs it will be barely stronger then a species with 2 arms and 1 leg. Even ur speed is barely faster, but its really all pointless as once you reach the space age none and i do mean NONE of you stats mean ANYTHING WHATS SO EVER.
also EA said that it would take more then 10 life times to conquer the entire universe... i have been playing for 5 days and I already own 10%. But to be fair it probably will take 10 life times to conquer the spore universe as the game is extremely boring and repetitive.
the reason this spore really pisses me off is because i thought spore was going to be completely revolutionary and epic game that would be easily worthy of the Gaming Hall of Fame. instead i get an eight year old's game where all the complexity was taken out. And don't even get me started with there ridiculous security that doesn't even work.
i am so glad i didnt buy this game. Will Wright... i am extremely disappointed!

I agree, I'm glad I haven't messed with it. I hate securerom and any company that uses it is totally without any ethics when it comes to delivering software. I really wouldn't lose any sleep to see EA file bankruptcy.

From what I've read it's MOO with the creature creator added, and a bunch of annoyances related to micro management. I've also always heard terrible things about SecuROM, and new stories I'm hearing don't make me any happier. They apparently do not inform you that it is installing either. Not going on my computer

I played it for a few hours last night, and...it's a Wii game. That's the best way I can describe it. Admittedly I didn't make it to the space phase which is supposed to be the "hardcore" part of the game, but after playing the other phases I don't really care to bother with it anymore. It is a simple, dumbed-down game with no depth or complexity, aimed squarely at the casual gaming market. Not for me. I'll never understand the adulation that developers like Will Wright and Peter Molyneux command from the gaming press.
