Money Exchange Strategy
So the NPCs average 200-450 in caps.
What do you do when you have so much loot that you cant cash out because both the doc and the Supply chick are tapped out?
Buy for your home either:
Nuka-Cola Machine
Infirmary
Work Bench
Obviously you need so many weapons in your lockers that you need to empty your pockets first. Also, I usually only store fully repaired to my skill weapons.
Last night I did this:
Sold out.
Bought the Bench.
Sold out.
Bought the Med Station (infirmiry)
Sold out.
Bought the Nuka-Cola machine
Sold out.
And effectively walked away with 1400 caps still in my pocket.
I'm a pack rat in this game.
I sweep a map and as I clear a floor (like the police) I find a Fire Hose Station and empty all my loot into it and go on to the next floor.
There may be a million desks, but usually only one or two fire hose stations- so I use them so I dont have to remember where I stored my loot.
After I am done with the entire Instance (the building or subway or etc) I then do fast travel back and for the Megaton to empty my pockets. After I am done doing that, I spend a few minutes repairing, then I completely empty my pockets and re-equip so that I am carrying the least weight and no more than two weapons and one melee weapon. I usually opt for the Combat shotty and the Chinese Assault Rifle knowing that I will pick up mines along the way and unlimited ammo thanks to my packrat tendencies
I currently have over 500 rounds of every type of ammo in my lockers except the .308 which only seems to pop up if you are carrying that gun while you forage, and even then the ammo rate is 3 -10 rounds a find, with possibly only 1-2 finds per instance/subway/etc.
Pass on the themes in my opinion. There is no value return on them, unlike the 3 machines I mention.
