Moving to a new PC - Moving Steam

OK, so someone tell me again, EXACTLY how to move my Steam games to a new PC, then log back in to Steam so everyth8ng recognizes everything else....

Folder names, etc...

I'm going from XP to Win 7 Pro.

Or will I be better served to perhaps let the games re-download Fresh, and only move my config files ?? If so where exactly are my config files like my keyboard layout setup ??

They will be in C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\SteamApps\GameFolder\Cfg

On the My Games tab in steam, you can right-click a game and select Properties. In Properties, go to the Local Files tab. There is the option to backup game files. I'm not sure if there is an easier way to back up all games. I am also not sure if it backs up all of the config files.

I just copy the Steam Folder to C:\ProgramFiles\Steam. Then when you reinstall Steam everything will be in place and ready to go. Installing Steam will not erase your game files.

Install Steam, then copy over everything. Saves a bunch of downloads and your configs, savegames, etc...

I would delete your clientregistry.blob file, before firing Steam back up though.

1. Install Steam on the new system
2. Log into the virgin Steam with your account (during installation it's doing 2 quick Net Autoupdates)
3. Close Steam and exit it completely (no Steam symbol in tray left)
4. Now copy the STEAM directory from your backup medium (DVD-R) over the fresh installed STEAM directory
5. Restarted Steam and all games are 100% complete and ready to play *HORRAY!*

Your games fit on a DVD-R?! Just installing TF2 last night put me at 8.34 gigs or something insane. I'm back up to like 20, was at 34. 14 of that was OLDDDDDDD custom maps. Like melleebarn and hallofdeath. I miss those maps.

The only thing you need to save is the data files that hold the save and config files. Everything else will be there when you download the game again.

After you download the games, you simply drop those files into the folder and it will be there the next time you start the game.

OK I copied all folders except the Steam folder itself and it seems to have worked like a charm !

On a related note, I'm looking to move my Steam installation to a new external drive, which we'll call drive B. I have the same directory structure on B as I do A, the old external drive.

Would it be wisest to simply reinstall Steam (this time on B) and go from there, or do I absolutely have to uninstall the old installation (for which the computer shouldn't technically be able to tell the difference) before going ahead? I don't really want to move however many gigs are in the main Steam directory on A, so if I can simply start sorta-new, that'd be great.
