    Increasing FPS

I'm looking to eek out a few more FPS in the heat of a huge firefight...

What setting causes the biggest FPS hit while providing the least noticeable graphics eye candy ??

    Thx !!

    I would think AA (anti-alias).

just set everything to high...you should get 300 by doing that

it's awesome having an average fps of 15 in crazy firefights.

strange. i remember this game running better on my 7600gt than on this 8600.

luckily a friend is selling me a 4850x2 for 150.

I would have to disagree with you there...Before I built my current Monster rig and was running with a 7300GS, I was seeing tops 45FPS in COD4...when I upgraded and changed the maxfps line in the console, I was seeing 250 FPS and the difference in the quality was way more then 15 FPS (My monitor is at 60 for refresh)

I'm not sure where all of mentaldemise's posts went, but he was spot on. Your monitor cannot display more frames per second than its refresh rate -- hence features like VSync. Besides that, for most people, flicker fusion occurs between 50-60Hz, and image rates beyond 72Hz are nearly indistinguishable to my knowledge.

You may not see anything else on the monitor, but it can make a difference in hit registration, etc.

In terms of the server and client FPS term

When you press the fire key, a 'frame refernce' is sent along with it, the server then checks this against its references.

The more FPS you get the less guess work is done by the client and server.

be like you shouting my name and me saying hold on till i write it.
then i get a rubber stamp, next time you shout i 'write' my name quicker.

On screen FPS may not exceded your screens sync but the 'draw rate' (not the real meaning its my term for the hardwares view) which people mean when they say my fps is, can be higher, the hardware is rendering at that speed, but the monitor only pulls out what it wants at the time.

Its like real life, things dont just jutter from one spot to the next cos our eyes have a limited rate, they move smoothly, we just take the information that we need at the time.

Gamers mean draw rate, not vsync rate

and yes i know this is not technically accurate, but its simple way of how it works

As I understand it, the game FPS affects not only how many times the game refreshes the screen. It will also affect the number of times per second the game checks for inputs, either from keyboard/mouse and incoming game packets, basically any I/O operation. A higher FPS will make the game run smoother and interact with the server more smoothly. This will increase hit registration. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but anecdotally, this seems to be the case.

Your game client get and send packets from and to the server at the servers fps, which standard hl2 servers run at 20-30fps or so i cant mind the exact rate off hand.
Modifing the 'tickrate' will increase this speed, and make less guesswork for the server and client.

Your right during this time the the cleint does poll for inputs, and sends them to the server, and asks for the next 'frame'.

If your client's 'view' is < the servers fps your viewpoint will be skewed and out of line, thats why you jutter when you move when you drop below a certain fps, its not lag.
Its just you dropped below the servers fps be it network congestion or hardware bottle neck.

For some reason, no matter what my settings, "High detail, low detail, AA on/off" my FPS is always the same. I finally switched to DX 8 mode which allows me to play in massive fire fights. Its odd as I have a 8800GTS and was getting 15FPS when a lot was happening on screen, and my processor isn't -that- bad.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
