    audio over HDMI

Hey, I got a new monitor that has an HDMI input and I was wondering: how do you get audio over HDMI with an offboard video card? I have a GTX275, and it has a DVI-to-HDMI converter.

EDIT: also, I am using an X-Fi card for audio.

That's a good question. It appears looking at the link below, on the Specifications tab, it requires a SPDIF audio cable jumpered from the motherboard to the GTX275. Is there anything in the setup instructions about this and was a SPDIF audio cable provided?

What motherboard do you have. Now I have to ask also, does the monitor have speakers built in for HDMI audio support?

I have an ASUS P5N32-E SLI. The monitor has speakers, but I haven't tried them out yet. The video card came with an SPDIF cable, but I don't think there is a SPDIF header on my X-Fi card. Does that mean it will only work with the onboard audio? I don't even have it enabled on my board, since I am using the X-Fi.

Oh, another thing. The reason I am trying to do this is I have a DIRECTV app that will allow me to watch shows recorded on my DVR on my computer. Unfortunately, it requires HDCP. When I try to watch something it says the audio is not protected. I thought if I used the HDMI it would get around this issue. Any ideas on other ways to get around this problem?

You need an audio loop cable to connect the graphics card to the sound card. It's a small 2-pin cable that should have been included with your graphics card. Plug the joined end into the graphics card and the spdif and gnd ends into the proper headers on your sound card. I don't know the specifics of your sound card since "x-fi" is very general but it is usually on the back end of the card where you would plug in a 3.5" face. Check the manual to make sure.

Also by doing this you will effectively negate the quality gains from the x-fi since you are passing through the audio. Considering you are using built-in monitor speakers, IMO, it might be easier to use the mobo headers since those are always easy to find and some x-fi cards may not support it.

Hope this helps, I can provide some pictures if needed.

you can do that or you can get an MP3 to RCA wire and plug one end into your front audio panel on ur rig, and the RCA end into your TV...Ive done this and works great

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
