    FAT recovery

the FAT on my backup harddrive has been corrupted. do any of you have any advice for free software to repair it? this drive uses NTFS so I guess technically it's not a FAT repair...

Thats the one downside I see with many external backup drives .. its a dirty secret, but few support NTFS !

Actually if the drive is larger than 32GB it's NTFS or some other format, since FAT32 is max'd at 32GB for most OS we work with.

I haven't seen that many NTFS formatted drives get corrupted that much. Is this your main drive, an extra data drive...?

I know it's probably a silly question, but what errors did chkdsk give you on the drive?

Give us as many details as you can and we'll see what we can find.

DB, did you read my posts? I said that it was ntfs and that I fixed it with Testdisk.

I was installing Ubuntu using wubi. in the process it currupted my MFT on my data drive. I highly recommend testdisk. it was very quick and easy to use. it was also free!

I've installed ubuntu and debian numerous times and never had that issue?

I have too(ubuntu at least) wubi is an installer that installs ubuntu on your windows partition. it doesn't run in windows but you can uninstall it through the control panel like any other app. I'm not really sure what happened. testdisk identified the table as FAT16 when I ran it.

Not necessarily. My WD Mybook is 750GB and came installed with FAT. not sure how they did it, BUT, i swapped it to NTFS as soon as i plugged it in.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
