AMD set to spin off its factories

To be announced officially tomorrow, AMD will spin off its factories into a new joint venture with investors in the Persian Gulf state of Abu Dhabi.

This will shore up AMD's finances and let it focus on the design and development of computer chips. The new venture, to be based in the U.S. and for now called Foundry Co., will include AMD's manufacturing plants, including two in Dresden, Germany.

Regardles of what you think of AMD's current performance from their CPU's, we need them to stay in business or else Intel would never offer any sort of competitive price cuts on its CPU lineup. AMD's stock is up to a very good level, so this will stop the bleeding for the time being.

How long until they are referred to as Arab Micro Devices ??? Ohhh, less than 30 minutes is my guess ..

    WT,
I agree, we need AMD in the market for sure !!

    Somewhat related...

I have all the Municipal Water Valves running into the Luther-Forest AMD Facility in Saratoga. It 15-20 minutes from my house.

The municipal improvements to the area have been huge since they announced the new FAB 4X Plant a few years back.

Tres' cool, Vito !!! So, did you get a grand tour, or did they just kick you out and make you sign a non-disclosure form ??

I will say that if you are building an HTPC rig, or want the best bang for the buck card, AMD with its low wattage chips and 4850 are the best items for the task. Unfortunately, that isn't enough of a majority to keep them competing head to head against Intel. The new chip releases aren't anything to write home about either so far (Shanghai and Deneb).
Fusion is a very clean and fast concept, but AMD is clearly keeping it under wraps until it is bulletproof and well received in the hardware field, unlike the debacle that came about from the Barcelona release that they continued to praise even though they knew it was outperformed by an equivalent Intel chip.

        Hmmm

I've always used AMD in my builds, in part to support the underdog and partly because Intels commercials have always been so...well, can't think of a politically correct term. When my FX60 can no longer keep up with games, I will probably go AMD again (hoping that will be a while yet, though: got to save myself before I save AMD).

I'm with Skud on this one. At some point you can't recommend Intel for everyone. The AMD chips still rule the budget build, and I saw a deal on an AMD 2.3 BE for $29 last week at the 'Egg.

              $29 !!!!

That would be perfect for any family member that isn't playing CoD4 or some such game. I am the king of impulse buying, but I somehow missed on buying one (which is probably a good thing).

That's how WT ended up with his wife....Russian brides on sale ftw Now I just gotta figure out if I ever gave him my address and barricade the door if so...

Hopefully AMD comes out with something stellar soon though, Intel is just blowing them out of the water.

The king of impulse buying! lol I think I used to be, but, as I said, I'm trying to make this system last...I'm not looking at posts about new GPUs, CPUs, hot deals or anything!!!

In response to this marketplace announcement, Intel had this to say:
