Setting up a joystick

All this flying talk inspired me to get my joystick out to and give it a try. The only problem is that I can't get it to work. The controls for the joystick are blank and i can't get it to recognize it in game. Is anyone using a joystick?

My Sidewinder is too dusty to try, but here's a link to committed joystick users. Maybe some good info here.
