I see people from time to time with colored names... how is this done ?

First you buy some crayons, then you scan them in to your computer. Import them in to COD4 and then very very carefully color inside the lines of your name! Tada, you now have a colored name!!

I assume it's done the same way the colored chat is done.
^1 = Red
^2 = blue
